667 to 800??

Thread Starter
my HP dv9620us has 2 gb of DDR2 667 (PC2 5300).

i want to get better memory for it, and at the laptop memory prices im a fool not to. BUT should i stay with the same memory
DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)

or go with

DDR2 800(PC2 6400)

will the computer even benefit from the higher speed? or even accept it?

while im at it, should i just get 4 gb? the laptop has vista x32. and yes i know it only uses 3 gb, but again at the prices of laptop memory im a fool not to, i thought the sp2 of vista was gonna fix the 3gb issues too.

I think it would make a small difference, but you laptop is unlikely to accept it. And yes, you may as well pick up 4gb.

run cpu-z, see what your processor is running at with the ram

667 should be enough

Most notebooks on the market don't use DDR2-800 since the 965xM series of Intel chipsets is limited to DDR2-667.
The only ones that do seem to be desktop-book machines like the Asus C90S, which runs on a different chipset.

You'll be best using 667.

The notebook will match the chipset's capabilities, and no faster. S if you buy the 800, it will run at 667. Your best bet is to make sure and get cas4 ram. My HP dv2125nr is running 2x2Gb G.Skill at cas 4 without a single problem.

And to answer the question about the 4Gb of ram in 32, that will never change. All the SP fixes is the amount of ram the OS recognizes. So if you have 4Gb of ram in a 32bit OS, the OS will report 4Gb, but only use approx. 3Gb.

There is no service pack that can fix the 3GB issue. Its a limitation of the 32bit architecture. The fix is to use 64 bit. There is nothing you can do to fully utilized 4GB of ram in a 32bit world.

You can enable the Physical Address Extension for RAM to try and better utilize what you have, but you will never get the full 4GB.

With my desktop I was only able to get 2.75GB in 32bit windows before I upgraded to 64bit. Some of the limitation is affected by motherboard and processor as well. Some people have been able to get as high as 3.5GB, but that is the maximum you can hope for and there is no guarantee you will get that high.

So yes, RAM prices might be great now, but if I was you I would try and see if you can borrow another 2GB from someone and test it out first, because the last thing you want to do is drop some $$$ on 2GB of ram, and only be able to use 750MB of it.
