I am hoping someone with a similar system to mine might able to help. BigBen has a similar setup, so perhaps he or others may have some insight.
I have had my system for about 2 weeks, and I cannot get any OC to be stable. The lowest OC I have tried is 2.75 as anything below that does not seem worth effort.
I have tried FSB-only, multiplier-only, and various combinations all with no luck. My main BIOS settings are (aside from FSB and multi):
CnQ = disabled
HT Link = 7x, but 8x,9x,10x, and auto seem to make no difference in freeze issue
Mem = 1:1.266 ratio (5-5-5-18) at 2.5Ghz, 1:2 (5-5-7-24 or Auto) when OC. Tried both ganged and unganged with no positive effect
Auto Disable DIMM/PCI freq = Enabled (tried Disable which seem to prolong the freeze, but eventually froze none the less)
Vcore = Auto, but have tried settings up to 1.49 with no effect
MemV = 2.1
NBv = Auto, up to 1.25 did not make any difference
HTv = Auto, up to 1.25 did not make any difference
Spread Spectrum = Disabled
Basically, anything from 2.75 - 2.9 boots into Vista, but then freezes eventually. 2.9 freezes pretty quick with just normal PC use. 2.75 works great under normal PC use and passes Prime95, Memtest, AOD, etc., but it will mostly freeze when the PC is completely idle. I walk away from the PC for 30 minutes and come back and it is locked. 2.8 passes all stress/memory tests but still freezes somewhere in the middle of the times it takes for 2.75 and 2.9 overclocks to freeze. I hope this makes sense.
2.95 will not boot into Vista, and 3.00+ will not even POST and I need to clear CMOS.
All of my temps are fine with idling in the upper 20's to low 30's and under load in the upper 40's to low 50's depending on BIOS settings.
I am about to conclude that I just have setup that does not want to overclock. The good news is that at stock, my system is completely stable. I am just looking for that little extra because......well, just because!
After reading through all 40+ pages in this post, I have tried various combinations that others seem to have success with, but don't work for me.
For those with the MSI K9A2 Platinum board, what BIOS version are you using? I am using 1.4. Is 1.3 better for overclocking, and will 1.3 recognize the 9850 CPU? MSI seems to claim that only 1.4 will work, but I have seen people using 1.3 without issue.
