Please Help withy My $1000 build

Thread Starter
I am looking at a pc build for about 1000$. I would like to do either crossfire or SLI, and plan on overclocking a quad to 3.2ghz or more. I also would need a single terabyte drive for this machine. What do you guys recommend, Crossfire or SLI? Also what mobo and CPU are you thinking of... + to all that help.

I think it may be a little difficult to get an SLI board and a single TB drive with other components for $1000. Sorry I can't take the time to see for sure, but I'm just speculating as I have spent the last few weeks putting together some Wishlists for friends with $1000 budgets and I have only been able to come up with average components; no SLI board, single 250GB HDD.

Crossfire or SLI, a 1TB drive, a quad core, and all this needs to be overclockable... for under $1000? lol goodluck. It can be done but some parts will be less than quality. You can have a 1TB drive, quadcore, 8800GT, and overclockable components for under $1000, but SLI or Crossfire is going to push this thing over budget.

Here's a solid crossfire build with your 1TB drive:
$225 - ASUS P5E X38
$200 - Q6600 from Microcenter (hurry before they sell out)
$340 - Two Sapphire HD3870 512MB
$230 - 1TB HDD
$100 - 2x2GB G.Skill PC2 8000
$97 - Corsair TX650
$50 - Tuniq Tower 120
$30 - 20x DVD Burner w/ Lightscribe
$85 - CM RC-690

-----
$1357 Subtotal
$35 S&H
-----
~$1400 Total

This assumes you already have a 64-bit operating system, monitor, speakers, keyboard/mouse, etc.

Why a single 1TB drive? Two 500GB drives in RAID0 is not only faster, it's cheaper! And I really don't think you can cut many corners off that build without losing significant performance, but some suggestions to lower the cost:

-Get 2x1GB of DDR2 800 for $30 instead of 2x2GB for $100.
-Get two 500GB HDD's
-Get a cheaper X38
-Crossfire HD3850's instead of HD3870's
-Get a cheaper case
-Get an IDE DVD burner, or just a DVD ROM
-Get a POS PSU
-Go with stock CPU cooling

Like I said, I don't recommend any of those alterations (with the exception of the 2x500GB drives), but they could be done and still fit your criteria. I suggest you increase the budget or give up on the Crossfire/SLI aspirations.

To cut the cost down:

Get an ABIT IP 35 E from Newegg for $60 after MIR rather than an X38 board. ($165 savings)
Get a single 3870x2 rather than 2 3870's. Same graphics performance, one PCIX slot required. (No savings)
Get an E2180 rather than a Q6600 ($130 savings)
ANTEC Earthwatts 500w PSU ($40 savings)

All relative to the list above.

Hm.

well, this was as far as I got for building something off of newegg. Certainly not top shelf parts, but with a 1000 dollar restraint...its kinda tough.

(I was thinking you could re-use mouse, keyboard, monitor, DVD drive and OS.)

There's some rebates, so you could take advantage of that.

That board only has one PCIx16 slot, it cannot do SLI. And what about a case and DVD drive?

Since we all agree you're not going to get SLI or Crossfire for under $1000, time to reconsider the build. I would take all of Schroedinger's suggestions, but I'd get the Corsair VX550 off of buy.com for $65 after MIR instead of the Antec earthwatts 500W if you do go with the HD3870X2. This is because the HD3870X2 needs a 6-pin and an 8-pin PCIe connector, which the VX550 has. The Antec only has a 6-pin, and molex-PCIe connectors aren't the best idea (nor do I think they even have a molex to 8-pin connector). If you go with any other single graphics card, then the Antec earthwatts 500W is the better bet (since it's $10 cheaper, $55, on buy.com)

I'm curious what games you think you really need crossfire/sli for? Or just the egoboost of having more under the hood?

Save the cash and just be happy with 1 good solid GPU. You can get an 8800GTS 512 for ~200$ (240?) nowadays.

So here.
GA-P35-DS3L 99$
Frys Electronics Q6600 190$
Crucial Ballistix 2g pc2-6400 30$
WD caviar se16 500Gb (2) 120$
PC P&C 610 100$
Tuniq 50$
8800GTS512 (call it 220$)

Assuming I'm not missing anything, thats a pretty sexy setup for ~900$ before mir.

*Edit
Woops, duh, forgot the GPU

Upon hear what you guys have to say I'm going to spend a little more than I had planned, but still not go SLI. Instead I will be getting the following:

q6600
Gigabyte Ds3L
Seagate barracuda 7200 500gb drive
Ati 3870x2
4gb adata ddr2 800
Cooler Master 690 case
Rosewill 600 Watt power supply
ultra 120 extreme with Scythe fan

This will end up costing me $1126 total after shipping.

What do you guys think??
