[JonnyGuru] Ultra Sues for Modular PSU Patent - Page 14

PLEASE read the ENTIRE thread before posting, and not just the OP. I just keep stuff being brought up that already has been discussed pages ago. thanks.

And NO patent law means NO progress. If you can't get a patent, do you think ANY company would invest millions in a new idea? Absolutely not, since the moment they market it, everybody else runs off with it, and the inventor ends up with nothing.

Stuff like this makes me want to spit. I will NEVER buy an Ultra product again.
Did they ever claim they invented it? No! They patented it though.

Performance-Pc's should have patented it.

How it is a shame that a company defends its patent?

Oh look, another consumer boycott in the works. Because the Creative one was so successful...

Ultra has every right to do this, like it or not.

Ahhhh... no. The X3 series is better than most of the other manufacturer's units. Please don't make generalizations when it can so easily be disproven.
I disagree. The X3 is obviously good no doubt. But not the best there is. There are better PSUs. And it was my opinion so no need to get mad at me (sort of how it sounded not sure tho) I dont care if I get "Disproven". I wouldn't buy Ultra just like some people wouldn't buy a Ford because they like Chevy.

Where did I say that we should start a boycott? I just said I won't be purchasing any of Ultra's products because of their cheeseball patent suit.

They have every legal right to do it, as I've stated repeatedly since page one, but that doesn't make it morally acceptable to me.

Somewhere in the middle of the thread I suspected that the defendants may have a chance of getting it nullified, but that suspicion was dissolved as soon as I read through their patent. It is solid.

Actually, yes they did. Or actually, their salesman did:

That pretty much says "We invented it" in so many words.

Also, we've been over that back and around again. See a few pages ago where I get into it with JonnyGURU and then we kiss and make up.

I liked the 'kiss and make up' part

And also, I noted someone asking whether jonnyguru is legit... well, that's just about the same asking whether overclock.net is legit

Yeah, that had a little bit of lol in it. I was nice in explaining to that fellow though.

edit: To explain my position here a bit better for those late to the thread... I work at an electronics manufacturer. Many times when we build prototypes, they will have rigged up connectors, or even cables hanging out of the enclosure. Then, when we prepare them for production, we clean them up, properly mount all of the connectors, tuck in all of the cables, and slap a fancy sticker on.

Not once have we ever had the audacity to patent a finished product, solely because it was finished.

That is essentially what Ultra did with P-PC's unit, and marched right down to the Patent office and declared that it was their invention. They didn't invent anything new, and the modifications they made were purely common sense. In addition, my boss has been modularizing the power sections in his control electronics for over thirty years. If you read Ultra's patent, there are actually a couple of references to the same.

Patents are wonderful tools when used to protect inventor's truly new intellectual property. When they are used as monetary leverage and the sense of "new invention" is hazy as it is in this case, I think that is truly shameful.

This happens every day around the world, and in many cases much worse. That doesn't mean that it is right. "Legal" and "Right" don't always fall into the same category.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Obviously Ultra knew other companies were using their technology, but they didn't do anything about it until now for the $. That's what I was saying about the legal system earlier. Hopefully they consider the time it took for Ultra to make the suit..
