Ultra makes modular PSU
Patents modular PSU design
People start making modular PSUs
Ultra asks them to stop, they either do or dont
For those who don't ultra follows through on their patent

OMG BAD PEOPLE OMG

No.

They patented it, people violated the patent. I have no change of heart towards Ultra, this isn't a "morally" wrong thing to do.

If you had a patent and a bunch of people started using your idea to profit off it, would you just say "oh gee golly thats a shame" or would you follow through with your patent?

Thought so.

that's probably undisclosed.

But they better have, otherwise the case has little chance.

Actually, it doesn't seem like very much is undisclosed:

I can not believe all of this stuff is public record!!! SCARY! I even saw my name in there once.

Regardless of whether Ultra is in the right, this isn't great news for power supply customers, at least in the short term. If Corsair has to pay Ultra a licensing fee, they aren't going to just eat the fees... they are going to pass on the costs to the consumer. So we'll end up paying more for the same PSU.

On the flip side, it might also encourage other PSU developers to come up with something different (and possibly better) than Ultra's modular design... which would be good news in the long run.

I dunno, I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I don't have a problem with patents which came as the result of millions of dollars of research... but when somebody patents something as simple as Post-It notes, it sorta irks me. Call it jealousy perhaps.

Aww... Dammit.

I just searched by date to get the full listing: April 4th 2008. Have to do it by date because it's broken down into 17 PDF's. Each one is about 100 pages. Other search terms only pulls up one at a time.
