I'll admit that I haven't read the patent itself, so at this moment I do not know how much Ultra's patent focused on that fact. I'll probably read it later tonight.
What I do know, is that when I mentioned this to my boss, who happens to hold three "legit" patents, two of which have been successfully defended in court, and explained to him the difference in the two PSU's... he basically said "Good luck Ultra!"
As I said before, we are currently pushing a patent for one of our products, and the "connectors in/connectors out" argument is chicken scratch compared to some of the points that we've succesfully contested so far in our efforts. My company is playing with the big dogs here... Northrop Grumman, LM, ONR, APL, JPL... not some 2-bit electronics manufacturer. From what I've seen so far in my experience with patent litigation, the "Short cables" argument very well may not hold water.
