Help choosing from select mobo for OC of q6600

Hi everyone

I just wanted to ask what people's opinions would be on the best board for oc'ing a q6600 g0. Before i had bought an evga 680i LT board thinking that it should be fine but i found out that it wasn't so great at OC'ing quad cores and that it was much better at dual cores.

I'd like to be able to OC to 3.6 ghz stable with air cooling. I am using a Tuniq Tower 120 which is pretty good so im pretty sure with the right board, i can do it.

These are a few of the boards i am thinking about

evga or xfx 780i
evga 750i FTW edition
MSI p7n SLI Platinum (as i hear there are some issues with Diamond and that the platinum is pretty good)
DFI Lanparty LT or DK X38-T2R
ABIT IP35 Pro

If anyone can give me some input about reasons why you like or don't like one of those boards please let me know. Also i'd like to be able to use one of the pci slots for an X-fi and im thinking of SLI in the near future.

Thanks a lot!

the 680i is just fine for oc'ing the xfx nforce 680i sli is a great board. a lot of people prefer 680 over some of the newer ones. hopefully they could elaborate here as i don't remember the specifics. right now im using the xfx nforce 680i lt sli and ive had no problem getting up to 4ghz even with the q6600 mind you i am using water to cool. you're gonna wanna lap that tuniq tower.

Thats interesting. I get to 3 ghz w/o voltage change but after that even when i set my voltage to 1.45 i can't even get 3.3 ghz. I've seen a lot of other rigs and read up on it and usually with a voltage of 1.45 to 1.5 i should be able to get 3.6 ghz speeds.

I've been doing linked and synced though so far since quite a bit of people have recommended that. I don't know if that is causing it but it could be a possibility. I also have read up that a lot of people have a hard time getting the q6600 to hit 3.3 and over on the LT boards but that its fine on the normal 680i boards.

I've read a few reviews about all the boards i listed above but i just wanted to see what people who have oced or used it before really think about them.

Be careful with the evga 680i's though, cause i went through 11 (yes, 11) dead boards before giving up and grabbing a gigabyte x38 board.

lol I think eVGA was playing a funny joke on you. I can see eVGA now... employee#1: "LOL he sent it back again" employee#2: "you know what to do, stick it in a new box and send it back "

either that or your mailman was practicing his dropkick

CapDubOh would you highly recommend the MSI?

i've read a few reviews on the MSI and the DFI and they both seem to be very overclock friendly which is pulling me towards them.

I would indeed recommend it. The DFI bios and my MSI bios are pretty similar and both are pretty good for overclocking the Q6600. A fair warning though, they take quite some time to get used to if you haven't used them before. I run SLI, a vDIMM of 2.1, a vCore of around 1.44, and NB at 1.42v. It handles that pretty well.

If you end up purchasing the MSI P7N Diamond, send me a PM or something if you need some help with the BIOS.

EDIT : Check out this post for more info on the P7N Diamond

lol drop kick thats great, like ace ventura pet detective :-P . im sitting stable so far for almost 5 1/2 hrs at 3.5ghz with cpu voltage 1.33v (under load) i think it was either 1.36 or 7 idle... anyway i just upped the fsb voltage from 1.4 to 1.5 which is supposed to be the maximum for the 680 and so far its been incredibly stable at much lower cpu voltages than before. i unlink my memory, ill play with that a bit later on. (fsb: 389mhz x 9multi)
