Help me lap my TRUE

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I know there has been a billion TRUE threads I apologize, I just had a few questions because I have never done anything like this before and I really dont want to mess anything up

I ordered a lapping kit online that consists of 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 2000, and 2500 grit paper. Should I just stick to the 400 then 600 til its flat then just go to 2500 or 2000?

Also, I have never really gotten this part, do I need to moisten the sandpaper in any way? like spray water on it or anything? or does it need to be completely dry?

Also what is the best method of the actual lapping process? Should I just go in one motion until all the scratches are going the same way and then turn it 90* and do the same thing until I do that a few times 360*?

Also should I lap my Q6600 processor? Would it be easy for a beginner at lapping to do?

Okay, here's some answers to your questions:

1. I personally just use 400, 600, then 800 and let the thermal paste do the rest, because once you have it up to 2000, you barely need any thermal paste at all, and it will be a detriment to you if you use too much. But a mirror finish does look cool...

2. Yes, you should moisten the sandpaper. Personally, I use just dish soap (palmolive or the like) and water.

3. I prefer a figure eight, then a 90 degree rotation, but your method seems sound. Just try to avoid rounding the edges..

4. If you wish, you can, though I personally have not because I'm afraid I'll get it too fine. Though, I'm sure it's not that hard to do.

btw, a TRUE is the most amazing thing ever dude...

You can buy those at wall-mart for 50 cents a-piece, don't worry about messing up the sandpaper as much as the TRUE. Don't soak it, but I'd just shove some soap and soak a paper towel, then let it drip on the TRUE.

Kinda messy for me, but hey, twas only my second time.

so I should just have some dish soap and some water mixed one the side to moisten the sandpaper and to wipe the true clean right?

I did not moisten my sandpaper until I got to 800 grit. I ruined a piece of 440 grit early in my lap job. The grain is to far a part on the lower grit so when you wet it, it falls off the paper and renders itself worthless.

Spread a couple of drops of 1-2-3 oil across the center of the paper each time you changer sheets during your 800,1000,1200 etc + grits.

You will need more then one sheet of 400 sens they are small sheets. I think you and me ordered from the same place. I ordered set with a refill. Depends how flat is your True. Use a spray bottle with water and soap to spray it on the paper.
I did my yesterday. Nice and shiney.
It took like 4 hrs to get it were I like it.

thanks I will be sure to use the spray bottle, thats a good idea

would I be alright just using 400 and 600 instead of multiple sheets of 400? If not I can get some more sand paper later from some auto store

Well if it's carbide grit it should last a while. as you sand the grains shatter which makes the grains reusable
