Deal: [Dead] $159 Maximus Formula SE X38 Open Box at Newegg

Update: Dec 3, 2008
Open Box: ASUS P5E LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard for $105.08 w/free shipping!

I am not one to push open boxed boards, but the Maximus Formula SE (Special Edition) is available as an open box at newegg for $159 (regularly $289). That is a great price. Worst case is you have to buy an I/O shield and audio card, both of which can be bought for $10/15 respectively.

You can check out the P5E/Maximus thread in my sig for some great info on the board.

And yes you can flash to the Rampage Formula bios with this board!

Newegg link: P5E open box

Here is an I/O shield that will fit these boards:

This is an amazing deal. I wonder if I should get this or a IP35 Pro. Ahh... choices.

Wow, this deal is so good. And it can be flashed to a Rampage? And I thought the $179.99 Maximus board (open box) was a good deal. I'm so tempted right now...

I have my P5E flashed to the Rampage Formula bios. There are easy to follow instructions here. You will find all the utilities, files, instructions and current 0219 Rampage Bios you need to do it.

Will there be any practical difference once flashed? I only ask because the rampage formula (at least the one I found) is x48 and... well I don't know what the hell difference that's supposed to make but it sounds great!

The real physical difference between the X38 and X48 is ZERO. The X48 is just a higher binned chipset picked to run a 400 FSB. But all of us running the P35 or X38 intel chipset already knows their chipset can handle 400 FSB with ease. The real benefit of the Rampage bios is all the ram timings you have access to. I was able to reduce my ram's latency from 69.4ns, to 59.9ns (using Everst's bench tool). It is just a great featue and too good to pass up!

How hot do these x38 northbridges run eric? Also, the northbridge cooling is rather large and awkward. Does it still have the same two holes diagonal to the die where I could add a universal chipset waterblock?
