Ground up gaming box for 8800gt. - Page 6

Was reading about RAM:
RAM has chipsets in it, many different brands/makes will have the same chipsets. If one RAM is labeled as 6400 while another is labeled as 8500 BUT they both have the same chipset, then they are basicaly the same thing.

My preferred store, ncix.com is out of sub $150 8500 4G ram right now, so I looked at 6400 to see if I could find some good chipsets in there. Problem is, I can barely find any of the RAM I'm looking at on the list. at all, nevermind one with a suggested chipset.

Bah! I say. I wish brick and mortar shops could compete with the big on line stores. Wouldn't mind waiting if I had a face in front of me who I knew would look after things. Maybe I will just put my order in and wait the week for restocking.

ANYWAY Overclocking:
I wonder how well this eVGA 750i FTW is going to do. Early benchmarks put it as good as a p35 for overclocking, maybe a bit less. Looks like OCing this set-up to 4G should be obtainable, that is my goal.

I will try with stock cooling to see how far I get, then I will buy some cooling and try for the 4G. Never OCed before so I am really looking forward to it.

sgdude: I've decided on higher rated ram so I have a bit more headroom for OCing, I am hoping to make things easier for myself, not looking for any records here. I finally decided on a 2x1GB set of 8500 Buffalo Firestix. The decision included: the chipset it was made from (Micron D9GKX), it's size (2G looks good enough for now), the price ($78) and a few reviews I checked out. I also kinda like that it is a lesser known item.

As for that processor, the one I have picked out is with fan. I would take an OEM and put the extra cash towards a cooler, but there is no OEM availible at the site I decided to go with, NCIX.com, which also is the cheapest price I've found up here in Canada.

Yeah Grimm, I was happy with those firestix once I researched them, and they are cool looking too imo. Just dong some last minute checking for any suprise sales on any of the items I had on my shortlist before ordering.

Am going with UPS, was a kinda random decision, and hope I get my stuff in a week or so, then there will be photos!

And a few days after that - numbers! I'll run it through it's paces, curious to see how the 750i FTW does..

edit: man.. while checking for deals I saw a BFG 8800gts 512MB for $245 (cheapest I could find in Canada with a good warranty) and I felt the pangs of needing more - and I havn't even put my order in yet! I am not going to spend an extra $75 for it though. I do hate computers.

Don't buy any video card with store warranty. BFG has a life time warranty and you don't even need to register the card. You also have a 100 day "Trade-Up" which is the same as the EVGA "Step-Up"

Yeah, after looking at the store warranties out there, and some of the no-name cheap-o card's warranties (and some do have warranties, like 1 year parts only, heh) I decided to stick with 'the good ones'. I thought gigabyte would have a good warranty, but nothing compared to EVGA or BFG.

also:
I pressed the Order button!
Final choices are on post #1. I feel glad with what I've ordered, lets see how I feel about them once they are out of the box.

After 2 buisiness days all my parts arrived except my cpu. I called NCIX and they said it was being packed and sent that day, it arrived the next day. The overcharged me 12 bucks, but quickly credited it back to my card when I asked about it. UPS was quick, I liked their online tracking system.

I put everything together fine, but realised I had left my XP installation disc in another province, that held everything up a week or so. Once I had it all together I downloaded Unreal Tournament 3 demo and BioShock demo, borrowed a 1680x1050 monitor and Wow! Cranked everything up to full, and giggled to myself for a while. Just great, amazing, kick ass. I so don't need to overclock.

Heh.. but I will anyway!

I think I will make another thread for my overclocking adventures.

Aside from the overclocking I need to:
-update 750i FTW bios
-find the best 8800ght drivers
-put everything in my crappy case and check temps
-start researching monitors
