What am I not getting? - TF2

Thread Starter
A lot of people seem smitten w/ Team Fortress 2, like it's the best thing to hit Online Gaming since Trade Wars (+rep if you remember that!)

I can't understand the hype. Now, granted, I can see the potential it has for teams that play together a lot - ie clans and what have you. But to just pick up and play? (I'm not opposed to clans, just never got involved. I did get pretty heavy into my WoW guild a while back, but that's as far as I managed vis a vis coop online gaming)

Nothing feels like it 'hits' right, the 'classes' seem too broad and the gameplay too simple. I'm not a purist about graphics or realism, but the heavy cartoon approach just drains any umph from the fragging.

I probably didn't play it enough; or if not that then I probably just fail at TF2 and am dragging up pathetic excuses for my inadequate gaming. But for the life of me I can't understand the considerable base this game possesses. Really, I'd love to play and have fun in TF2, but what it comes down to is the game just isn't FUN for me. And I have a hard time understanding the reason for its popularity.

I'm not upset at having bought the game, mind you, as bundled with it were two other amazing games I still get a blast out of playing (and were the overriding reason I got it).

I'd love to be enticed into trying it again (as much as I loath subjecting my machine to even more devious Steam code), so if you feel I'm missing something please, enlighten this disgruntled gamer, and open my eyes to the awesomeness that is TF2.

I am a diehard TFC (Team Fortress Classic) fan from back in the HL1 days. TFC is a much more pure form of competitive capture the flag and command point style play. There is a new iteration called Fortress Forever which is just TFC updated to the source engine. There are only a couple popular servers but I recommend trying either TFC or Fortress Forever.

TF2 only keeps my interested for a map or two before I put it down for weeks at a time.

Hmm, You can't try to compare TF2 to other FPS's as it is nothing like them. Give it some more time, get to know the classes, and try to be optimistic with it. I like the cartoonyness of it because it doesn't try to look realistic (and fail)...instead it goes for its own look which I think works.

Just give it more time and as you get better you will probably enjoy it more. Try out all the classes for at least an hour and then determine from there which class you want to get better with.

i agree with the OP. TF2 really wasnt what I wanted for the sequel to TFC! TFC is hellllllla fun. I miss playing a crazy medic or scout infecting people and doing conc jumps. Yes a lot of people may like the lack of nade spam but I feel that was such an integrated part of the game. TF2 deserves a major IMHO. So much so I just dont even play it any more.

I agree with you, I don't understand its appeal. And I played the game for month at least.

Please, enlighten me to any other game that provides more depth of gameplay than TF2.

There are some bad servers, and it really isn't as much fun with less than 16 people, but you say the classes are just too broad.. why is that a bad thing? I can understand how it wouldn't work, when they are unbalanced, but they aren't! As for the simplicity thing I'm not sure about that either, since the only character that get fast kills is the sniper. Everything else requires tactics, ammo management, positioning... If you're facing a soldier you have to be jumping around dodging his rockets so you can finish him off when he reloads, and the opposite, soldiers have to think ahead and manage their ammo. Similar things with every other class, since none of them are the same. And thats just 1 on 1 combat, there is still a whole other level when it comes to actually completing your objectives and working together as a team. You don't get that with ANY other multiplayer game.

Compare that to games like CSS and CoD4 where its basically the first person to fire who wins and come back and talk to me about simplicity.

The magic of TF2 is that it seems simple and you can just pick it up and play, but the more you play the more you discover about it. Its actually a nice feeling to completely dominate someone because you know what you're doing and you're good at the game, rather than relying on twitches.
