8800gt > 8800ultra

Thread Starter
I went from a 7900 gt to an 8800 gt 512mb. 3dmark 06 score was as follows for the 8800:

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=5800737 : Thats with stock clocks.

I then overclocked it to 720/1800/ and i forget the mem:

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=5747018 : O/C Results

2 days later i found a deal on 2 8800 ultras for $600. They were slightly used from a dell machine. Guy bought it for 3d cad design, and found out later he needed quadro's not ultras. His loss my gain. I dont have a sli motherboard atm. Currently im using the Asus p5k Deluxe/wifi ap (p35 chipset). But still it was a great deal and i figured i could pick up a sli mobo later. I installed the 8800 ultra and though it would just trounce the 8800 gt. but as you can see from my result the 8800gt beats it.

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=6172819 : clocks at 640/1600/1180

Then only difference between the 2 was with the 8800 gt i has the cpu at 3.3ghz wheras with the ultra it was at 3.05. But i dont think that would make the score difference that big. Any ideas? This was on vista 32bit home premium edition w/ sp1 and all drivers, and bios's are the latest. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Nic

Hi,

I'm looking at the futuremark links and it shows that the 8800GT was beaten by 1000 points over the Ultra, set your CPU speed to something constant and only change the GPU's then rerun.

If the Ultra gets beaten, try the other card - that one might be bugged or something.

*Edit* Just realised I was looking at the wrong link, a CPU overclock can make a large difference in the CPU test, I think that the CPU dropping 300mhz could be a problem.

I remember running '06 on stock CPU once and then on my 2.8Ghz overclock (1.2Ghz up from 1.6) and my score dramatically increased, thanks to it helping a bit in the graphics test and a lot in the CPU test.

Really on 3DMark06 I don't think going from 3.05 to 3.3 should make that much difference but it definitely would account for some difference. If you ran it with the same OC it might put the Ultra test back to around the same score as the OCed GT.

We won't know until you do it though...it's the basic rule of any experiment - only change one variable at a time.

I say it's the drivers fault (install/uninstall), your OC, slot on your board, or something unforseen.
I say its your OC's fault. That can make a pretty good difference...
try running the ultra with 3.3ghz CPU

Looks about right though 3dMark06 isn't always indicative of the results you'll get in actual game play. Try some actual games and see if the 8800GT is still better.
The 300 Mhz of OC would easily cause that discrepancy. Run both at the same frequency and you'll see them perform similarily up to about 3.4 Ghz, at which point the Ultra will pull ahead.

But you should try running some actual games to see which card gives a nicer experience.

look at my 3d mark score only real difference between ur cpu and mine 100mhz
post #10 of 15
1) CPU speed makes a pretty big difference in '06, as others have said. You have to clock the proc the same to make a valid comparison.
2) 3dmark06, run at it's stock settings, has become a pretty poor excuse for a graphics benchmark is the truth. It *strongly* favors a gpu with a high core clock speed (i.e. an 8800GT) over a lower clocked card who's primary strength lies in memory bandwidth like an Ultra.
3) When you get SLI running, remember that with cards as powerful as the Ultra SLI really only shows it's benefits at high resolution and high image quality settings. The 06 has none of the above. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if SLI didn't actually LOWER your 3dMark06 test vs. a single Ultra. Something to look out for in the future

You wanna see the advantage to the ultra setup, try running Crysis bench at very high, 1920x1200 with 4xAA turned on. It should easily beat a single 8800GT, and SLI'd they will trounce SLI 8800GT's.
