Best low-cost ATI card?

Thread Starter
Hello to everyone on the forums! I've been long-time ATI cards user, and I currently own a Radeon x1650PRO 512mb DDR2. I've tried to overclock it a bit, but the temperature rises quickly (I use air-cooling) so I returned it to the default core/memory settings. I rarely play games, so performance hasn't been that much of an issue, but I want to build a decent machine for Mass Effect PC which should be out in early June (besides that I'm playing only on Il-2 19146 which is an old game and doesn't require much resources).
Sadly, finances are an issue since I'm studying and I'm wondering what's the best cheap solution that that give the best performance for the games mentioned above?
My motherboard is Asus M2N32 SLI which doesn't support DDR3 so I guess even the low-end newer GPU's are out of the question?
I found several stores that offer Radeon 1650PRO's for 80lv (around 55-60USD). Would crossfiring another one with the one I already own produce good results? Possibly with some overclock or would that require better cooling system?
Or should I sell my 1650 and add some more for an HD-2x / 3x series (if the motherboard supports them)?
My CPU isn't that great also, it's a single core AMD Athlon 64 3500+ . Would it hold back any of the newer cards if I go for that option?

Apologies for the noobish questions but I haven't paid much attention to hardware development recently. Thanks in advance!

If ure on a tight budget, X1950pro/HD2600XT/HD3650 are great cards. I have a 2600XT in my HTPC rig and it plays crysis at decent settings and good speeds.

Buy my ATI Sapphire 3850 512mb version for 115shipped!!! Its a sweet card im just selling it to get a 9800GTX since i have a monster LCD again!

2600XT is good. Get the Sapphire 2600XT with 256Mb GDDR3.
My friend had issues with the 512Mb, so he got the 256Mb GDDR4, which he also had problems with, so he got a 3650, but lost performance.. so he got a 2900XT.
Anyways, I am using this card, its fine for all the games except crysis. So I might get a 38xx.

Your motherboard doesn't need to support DDR3 or DDR4 in order for you to use one of the newer cards. The video card's BIOS provides that support.

The memory your motherboard supports does not dictate which graphics cards you can use, as long as it has a pci-e slot and the bios supports it you're fine. Since you are an amd guy I would sell your 1650 and snatch up a this 3870

And you have an SLI board, so you can not crossfire either

Hey guys, thanks for the answers! It seems I'll hold back buying a new GPU until mid-June (when semester exams are over) and the price of the 3850's has dropped, probably ASUS. They seems to have the best models where I live (long warranty, nice cooling).
I can't open my case since it's still in warranty to check the power unit, but my warranty lists says it's Fortron Blue Storm 40 - I guess it's the ATX-400PNF (looks very similar behind the case). If I remain with my current single-core Athlon 64 3500+ and get a 3850 would the 400 watt provide enough power (one of the reason's I'm sticking with ATI, power efficiency)? And even if it did, would the CPU bottleneck the card too much?

talking about me? lol
yeah, if u can find a used 2600XT it's not a bad idea since u still a student low on budget and all
and tat 2900xt i have is also used, got it very good prices,

i find nothing wrong with used products, as long as they work, anything goes wrong just rma it, manufacture takes them anyways as long as itls real (fake hardwares are rarely seen in north america)

damn brand name computers with it's warranty lies
