HOW TO: Set up speakers properly - Page 3

You're right. Positives should be hooked up to positive, negative should be hooked up to negative for speaker terminals (just about everyone should have some sort of molex or rca connector that the speaker connects into instead of quick connects like car audio - you guys don't have to worry about wiring it in wrong, which is the majority of the people) but 99.999 percent of the time you do want your speakers like this, unless you're running a multiple woofer in a unique enclosure setup where you need the push/pull feature. If you hook up one speaker pos to pos, neg to neg, then the other pos to neg, neg to pos, you'll have your speakers out of phase, and it kills the sound.

k thx, that makes sense.
another thing, i a creative T3100 2.1 speaker system, and the sub has the port on the front, and the woofer on the left side, what is the optimum placement? Right now it sits to the left of me with the woofer facing away from me toward a semi-hard surface about 2-3in away. The port faces parallel to me aiming behind where i sit if that makes any sense. is there a better place to put this, i get enough bass, just wondering where the best place is. also the sattellites are facing slightly up(just a few degrees), is it better to have them below or above head level?

is there any reason why you'd want to switch pos neg, neg pos? would that push more sound out the back?

Not with a single woofer if it's designed well - you can get benefit from non-standard phases in a multi-woofer setup depending on how you are running things (a good example was mentioned a few posts ago).

Since it's port forward, woofer on the side, keep the woofer away from the wall, port towards you, and you'll be golden. You might get some cancellation or resonance from the wall if you get it too close. Slightly up is fine, as long as it's aiming at you.

Only in weird subwoofer designs where you have a subwoofer facing front, and a subwoofer facing back.

And one tip u should add:
Place the subwoofer beside a wall in a corner. It helps a LOT if u're looking for more "umph"

Lets say you have limited room space and you can't get your rear speakers behind you. How would you recommend setting up a 5.1 set?

(I'm asking because my main system is in the bedroom).

Thanks!

There is no such thing as a 2.1 speaker set, even if there's a sub woofer on a 2.0 pair. That's because it still only uses two channels, left and right, and borrows the low end from those, as compared to having it's own channel in 5.1 up.
