Folding from USB drive? Possible?

Thread Starter
Im at a university and i want to fold for you guys but me and my little dual core dont get that much work done. I however am at a university which has quite a few quads available.

My question:

Can i fold from a thumb drive while im using the computer? They wipe the computers every night so running them and leaving would be out of the question. (Unless someone wants to help get past that lol)

Or open to any other suggestions to be able to use the school computer that gets wiped every night. Thanks

This was linked to yesterday by people in the folding area of OCN. I havent tried it, but theoretically it should work. Included are instructions for folding from a usb stick using a SMP client, on various OS's.

if you did it that way, you couldn't run win smp, you wouldn't make the deadlines.

Couldn't he simply take the work file with him and copy it over whatever one is in that particular PC?

You would more than likely not be able to install the SMP client without an admin account, and since its a school machine, i doubt you have that.

The only way i see this working, is with the regular console client. Simply install it to the USB drive, copy the folder so you have as many instances as you need, run each of them & set affinity.

This is a great tool and use the USB version for when i am away from my pc (about 16hrs a day), but not for what the OP is looking for. It is either meant to run from VMware (which you shouldnt be able to install on your school machine) or running on a dedicated machine via booting from the USB or CD that is made by that page.

Right i cant run the smp version so im not worried about deadlines but i can run multiple instances of the text console.

"Couldn't he simply take the work file with him and copy it over whatever one is in that particular PC?"

Thats what i wanted to know, im not at school but i will certainly try some things tomorrow.

If you contain all the files on the USB stick, you shouldnt need to copy over anything, just plug and run. Just be sure to set the Machine ID properly for all your instances.

Good Luck.
