ooops. Should have mentioned that the build in the sig is more of an RIP scenario. You know those goofy posts about 1000's of dollars for a computer and not even 20$ for a surge protector? Well it just so happens I'm living proof that a surge protector is a good investment. Happened right before boot, so the only living component (the 8800) was sold for cash and the rest makes a nice door stop.

I really appreciate the input RayvinAzn, but the command has cleared desktops for Room inspects here at NAS Pensacola and being married I'll be out of the barracks in a couple of months as well.

Off topic- I'm only a wee little PFC right now, but as soon as I hit Lance Coolie I'm going to start working hard on the MCIs. I already have a plan for doing most at my own leisure on my PC at home in my spare time. As far as the gray belt, that's going to have to wait 'till I'm out of NAS Pensacola. The only program that lands you one requires a 280+ PFT, and I'm only running a 240-250ish PFT right now. My MOS is 6048, Flight Equipment Tech. Here we're known as stitch *****es. =p

Oh, and I'll definitely look into the higher speed fans. Pensacola gets mighty warm and the extra airflow would probably be very welcome. As far as the RAM goes, I figured I'd need some 1000mhz+ RAM to overclock the guts out of the E8400, but I guess I could set the divider to 1:1 and still get a nice overclock. I wanted a single card setup as I prefer it from a heat stand point as well, but it doesn't seem like there's any big end-all mommas out there right now (like the 8800GTX half a year ago). Given the relatively low prices of some sweet mid-range cards, I was thinking a nice dual setup would work nicely.. now if there was a nice, not ready to die close to end-all monster out there that I could stick in a single slot and later SLI for more performance down the road, I'd be more than happy to do so.. unfortunately, the 9800GTX sounds more than disappointing given the reviews on it lately.

I really think a single 8800GTS 512mb will get you by for now.

You're Flight E? At least that's an easy job - I did Avionics. Watch out for black chemlights/battery-powered chemlights, people love that joke. Did they tell you what squadron you might be going to? Most likely not, but there's always a chance. Most of the guys I know work on the Phrogs (probably the Osprey's now), C-130's, and Sea Stallions, but I do know a few guys that might still be in who are (were?) working on Harriers.

And enjoy your time at NAS Pensacola - it's the nicest base you're ever likely to live on. A bit cramped if they're still doing three to a room, but still rather nice accommodations. Don't spend all your time gaming either - you'll go plenty of places where it's boring enough to warrant spending a lot of time indoors, but Pensacola is pretty nice to get out and about. Shame you missed Spring Break though - Panama City is just an hour away, and I went there both weekends when I was in A-school. Even so, the beaches around there are a good time, but the clubs aren't up to par (if you're from a major city anyway).

And I still stand by my guns - a single card is plenty for most games now, there's no need to spring for a dual-card setup, especially at your resolution. At the most maybe plan for a second card later on down the line, but there's no need for one right away.

so stick with the SLI board but only grab one card at the current moment, maybe buying another one down the road of it looks necessary to play the games I want.. good advice, in reality. That'll help cut the build costs as well.

Any suggestions for the single card? I'm leaning more towards an 8800GTX now that I'm only pushing one, but maybe that's irrational given the strengths of the 8800GTS 512mb.

I'd definitely stick with the 8800GTS or 8800GT - there's no call for the 8800GTX given your setup, and trying to to SLI with one of those in a few months may be near impossible since the card is pretty much EOL.

well I have my build down from 2100 to 1800, and the only thing I really compromised on was the SLI setup. Now that leaves a small buffer for Keyboard/Mouse, and a copy of vista premium from my uncle at MS.

If You Are Ordinance, You Are Stupid

I can't count the number of times I had to go troubleshoot for ordies because they couldn't figure out how to work a multimeter. Or read a pub for that matter.

hahaha

Now that we have the afternoon crowd here, any other suggestions?
