Audiophiles help a noob out - Page 2

The other thing to consider, is whether or not you can stand wearing headphones for an extended period. I know that my big, floppy, dumbo ears start to hurt after a while.

Another thing to consider is whether or not you'll need to be quiet at some point for sleeping family members or roommates, in which case speakers aren't the best bet.

Edit: as far as your budget is concerned I would spend half of it on an XtremeMusic sound card, and the rest on headphone or speakers.

I don't ever really need to be quiet, but the thing is that if i get speakers it would make it hard for my friends to hear me on my microphone which I use a lot. Also I would like headphones because it's a lot more mobile so I can carry it around with my with ease.
I have big ears that stick out so.. yea I'd get it might hurt my ears after an extended period of time.

Also I was wondering if you could use say.. Sennheiser HD 515's with an ipod? I was wondering if they used a different kind of connection or something.

Edit: I just decided that yeah, I'm going with some speakers. I remember a while ago wearing some headphones and being really irritated with them. Speakers it is, if my friends can't hear me then, **** them

They have a 6.3mm jack, but they have an adapter to go to the regular 3.5mm you'll find on your ipod.

Ah, I see.

I have the x5300's which a cheaper, but I haven't compared the two. Even at $80, which is a good price, you still have $70 for a sound card.

i have the x-540 and the xtrememusic sound card, and it is really a great combination. if you want to save like ten bucks, you can buy the x-530 sound system, as it is the same speakers, but the mesh over them is absent on the x-530 model. all the specs seem to check out the same, so a good x-530/x-540 and an Xtreme Music would be awesome! Trust me!

To be clear about the terms, in the speaker labeling like 2.1, 5.1 etc.

The first number denotes how many non subwoofer speakers you have. They are usually evenly distributed around you in a box shape. 2.x or 3.x systems have them in a line infront of you. 5.x has them in the 4 corners of the room with on directly in front of you. additional number system distribute the additional speakers in an attempt to fill in the spaces in the "box"around you.

The .1 denotes the number of subwoofers which provide your low frequency sounds, concussive type sounds (ultra high end systems can be like 7.2 which is usually excessive). It also often provides much of the "power" for the speakers. Bose is notable for their speaker systems that have a fair sized sub with miniscule speakers for the higher frequency sounds, of course they over price them though. The sub is something you want to look for in speaker packages since it will provide a better bass which is important for games.

Headphones are pretty clear about what they are, just a couple of small speakers on either side of your head. While headphones often can sound great for less money than a 5.1 system; they do not effectively create a surround sound effect. Yes they fill your hearing and yes there are some surround sound headphones but for the large majority, they cannot create a true surround sound like a 5.1 system (yes i know there are ways to attempt to create that surround sound but its not actually coming from behind you and it follows where your head is). However, keep in mind that a 5.1 system is using some sound processing itself to create the surround sound effect itself from just those 6 speakers.

My view on this is that if you particularly care about the directional sound or do not like headphones, go for the speaker setup. However, if you are concerned about budget but want good sound, the headphones are good.

There are just a few things i want to say though. Please do not attack me for this, i am just trying to give an overview of the general area and am not going to include soundcard advice. Also there are exception to just about everything here. Yes the 5.1 setups are great but the reason i like the headphones is that the same speaker systems that the HD555's rank with on audiophile sites are often in the multithousand dollar range. yes i know that they aren't the same thing but you can kind of get the idea. Also i would say that from what i've heard, headphones like the skullcandy things they sell would probably be worse than an equally priced speaker set. But that is just my opinion.

Right now I thinking of a Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio and a Logitech X540

$134.90 without tax
Sound good? This would be a final decision.

Edit: I heard people bash the extreme audio like crazy on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829102016

I wouldn't get those speakers

these are a whole lot better IMO

http://www.buy.com/prod/logitech-z-5.../10387930.html

280w RMS vs 70w RMS

I think the difference is clear..

I'm really surprised that people are reccomending the X-540's over the Z-5300's ...

The Xtreme Audio is terrible. Do. Not. Buy. It.

Go for the XtremeMusic, and if you can't find it, the XtremeGamer is basically the same.
