Why do we need reservoirs?

First, many systems don't have them.

Second, on many systems they aren't at the highest point, intrinsically preventing them from bleeding the system.

Third, there is minimal temperature change and very low pressures (typically 10°C or less and less than 6psi; for reference automotive systems operate closer to 20psi with temperature gains of 70°C). Unless there is expansion in the hoses from the 4 psi, which should be minimal there shouldn't be a fluid loss to compenstate for.

In Martin's tests, which he is redoing, the reservoirs worked better at low flow rates. Is their any other reason to have one over a T-line with a fill port?

Some people find it more convienent than a t-line, and it can be easier to bleed most of the time.

More volume also takes longer to heat up, stays cool longer, and it makes it easier to gauge internal fluid levels.

Personal preference, the pump tops gain a little if done right. Bleeding is faster, but for most watercooling systems that stay installed for several months I don't think it matters much if it takes 1 hour to bleed or 3 days to completely settle in.

For testing, that's a whole different story though. If I had to bleed my test loop for several days between pumptop tests, it would have taken me all year. With my custom 24" x 4" PVC reservoir, it bleeds almost instantly, not to mention I can install my aquarium heaters in there for heat loading radiators.

yea, and most of this "foaming" that you hear is from people using T lines. With my reservoirs, I don't have to deal with that. Quick and painless bleeding so to speak

Are they needed to cool?, no but they add so much conveinence, bleeding, adding water. The only reason not to use one is if you move your rig around. I never do. I do not like internal reservoirs though, I have a 1 gallon water tower next to mine.

A fillport and syringe makes it pretty easy to add coolant.

For bleeding, are they installed as the highest point in the water cooled system? If so, does that eliminated most pump mounted reservoirs, in contrast with reservoirs that contrain a pump.

A Danger Den fillport tank is about 100ml. The hose from a case top mount to a bottom mount pump holds about another 50ml. That is fairly close to the 200ml in pump top reservoirs or the 133ml in a Swiftech Micro-Res.

You don't "need" one as stated. For me, seeing the fluid disturbance in my lil' Swifty Micro Res jut gives me a warm and fuzzy that all is well. I have a res AND a fill port because - well - just because it's MY rig.
