RAID question

ok, I'm gonna be setting up RAID 0, but I don't need all the space on the HD's to be used by the OS and games...is it possible to have RAID 0 on half the space of each drive and the other half as seperate drives?

ie.

2 320GB HD's, raid 0 on 160GB of each drive (would be C: in windows), 160GB from drive 1 would be d:, 160 GB from drive 2 would be e:

or something like that...it's just so that if the RAID fails, the other half of the HD that would be for storage should still be accessible if I plug it into a different comp, right?

....is it even possible? and would it totally mess up the RAID performance?

You can partition a raid array like you can a normal hard drive. However if one of the drives die on a raid 0 (stripping) array you lose your stuff, since to get the increase in read/write times it divides the data between the 2 drives, allowing you to theorectically get 2x the throughput . Raid 1, 0+1, 5 etc. have redundancy so you can recover data if 1 drive fails.

I'd just grab another one and raid two, and use the other for the other two partitions you want. I don't think you can raid between partitions on different drives. I think its all or nothing.

You'd lose everything, when you make a raid array you use both drives as a single drive. Its basically the same thing if you had 1 500gig drive partitioned into 4 parts. If the FAT becomes corrupted or if the drive stops working you will lose everything.

ok, but if I only set ~40GB as the OS partition, what happens with the rest, just wasted? I can't do anything with it? or do I NEED to RAID the rest of the drives as well to use them?

in other words, it's impossible to read the non-RAID partition of the drive if the RAID fails?

Ok. I get what you are asking. And no, AFAIK it is not possible. Once you RAID the two drives, you can partition it how you want, but you cannot have a section of either in non-RAID like you mentioned in the OP. Once RAID0 is set up, you might as well think of them as one drive.

No, you can partition the rest how you like.

You are confusing RAID with partition I think. Once you RAID the drives, it's the whole drive. Partitioning is done after the fact.

There is no non RAID partition, if you raid 2 drives its a RAID array. If you are asking if you partition the array to have like a 40gig os and the rest data, yes you can get stuff off the data drive if the OS becomes screwed up,like you could on a normal HD but if anything happens to the file system on the drives you lose everything. The drives become unreadable once separated since it writes/reads data off both drives. I.E. if you have a 1meg file that file is divided into 2 500k parts across the 2 drives.

Intels Matrix RAID will allow you to designate a section of the drives for RAID 0, then use the rest of the drives for a RAID 1, but im not sure if it will allow you to keep the raimaing space un RAIDed.

I was running a 400GB RAID 0 and a 33GiB RAID 1 on just two ~250GB drives.

It is possible to do what you want. You can partition the drives however you would like, just remember that when you raid them, if you have two dissimilar partitions, the raid volumes will default to the size of the smaller partition. (some controllers will complain about the mismatch and NOT allow you to proceed)

Partition the drives, go into the raid controller setup and use the partitions you want, initialize the "drives", then away you go. Most raid failures I have seen are due to a HD failure NOT data or partition corruption. If the HD fails ALL of your data is gone, not just one partition. If a partition gets corrupted, the other partition is safe.

In fact you can divide one drive into 3 parts and raid5 that single drive with the 3 partitions. Not very efficient but it can be done.
