I can't answer that one for you, it depends. Some are using Daniel_K's modified drivers and doing fine, others are swearing off Creative for good.

But these days there are other good brands out there (unlike in the past). Some biggies are the HT Omega Striker/Claro, Auzentech Prelude Xfi, bluegears b-Enspirer, Asus Xonar, Razer Barracuda. Look at them on Newegg and decide for yourself. The HT and bluegears are cheaper, and the Asus and Auzentech are really expensive.

Narrowed it down here...

bluegear b-Enspirer or Auzentech Prelude X-Fi? The Auzentech is about $75 more, but is it worth it?

...wow, a search for new speakers ends up being a new sound card as well.

The Auzentech is legendary as the next best thing to a Creative Xfi (maybe the best now that Creative is on the outs). Many audiophiles have it here at OCN. Honestly I would say whichever you can afford and you can't go wrong. The Auzentech has the Xfi audio chipset and the bluegears doesn't. the bluegears works fine, but only seems to release drivers every once in a blue moon (but it works perfectly so maybe they don't need to).

I would peruse the reviews on the Egg and see if there are any comments about how each card works with Vista. I use XP so I can't comment on the bluegear's functionality in Vista.

Both cards reviewer's mention "Works in Vista, unlike Creative!" so I don't think I'd have any problems with that!

But is the X-Fi worth it? I'm out of the loop on sound cards, so I really don't know. I can afford the Auzentech, but if the bluegear can give me sound quality just as good, I'd rather not spend the extra cash.

Thanks for all the help, GoneTomorrow! I appreciate it!

X-Fi Prelude is far superior from the b-Gears card. Get that, the drivers will work will with Vista AND you can hook up your Preludes with an optical audio cable for best sound with one cord. Definately worth more money in the long run

I had the ProMedia's and now have the 2300's.

The promedia's got loud fast, but also distorted a bit sooner than my 2300's.

BOTH of them have the same damn "static coming through the speakers" problem when raising the volume with no sound going through them.
