It Died - Reviving my AMD to an Intel

Thread Starter
Well. It finally happened... My beloved AMD build died a few days ago... It was aging by the day, and has been having minor strokes since I bought it... It's had quite a few heart attacks, in which I had to beat it back to life... It died fatally a few months ago, but a new PSU brought it back to life... Now, it seems that the holder of it's heart has vaporized...

Enough with the sad story...
Summarized: My M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wifi Edition Mobo went to computer haven\\heaven...
My 1 year warranty is months overdue, so I've decided to buy a new (LGA 775) motherboard to replace my AM2...

I'd like some advice on motherboard choice... I'm not transitioning to DDR3 yet... so my main choices are between the
EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 (780i SLI)
and the
XFX MB-N780-ISH9 (780i)

I'm planning on the Q9300
But, if it's not that much better, I could also buy the Q6600...
I figured the 100 MHz and 45nm would be better, even if the cache is 2 MB less and the Multi is 7.5(?). I read a few reviews that stated the Q9300 is better, and the extra $40-50 wouldn't bother me.

Please throw some insights and recommendations at me as fast as you can... I'd like to order this before the weekend so I can have it ASAP... No computer = misery for me

Edit:
I'd also like to note that 3 GPU's is most likely out of the question for me... I doubt I'll even buy 2 Physical GPU's, so the regular SLI, or other motherboards should work fine for me too... I'm planning on a 8800 GTS (92) or 9800 in the future, but currently I still use a 7950 GT...

do u have 2 cards or just one? any p35/x48 boards will make u a happy camper. if u plan SLI then the intel chipsets won't be of use (except for the Skulltrail....) the nvidia chipsets aren't too friendly to OCing quads but if ur just going DC then there good and should give u the bang for ur dollar. I would recommend the Q9300.
It is faster, cooler, got some new SSE instructions and less energy hungry than the Q6600.

Q9300 seems to be harder OC able because of lower multi and lower voltage tolerance.
But still you should get some good OC results ;o)

Q6600 is better for OC at the edge.
And of cause old Mainboards that can't go to very high fsb or don't support 45nm (what shouldn't be a point for you as you need a new Board anyway).

Hmm, if you are not going to SLI but just getting 1 good card later, get yourselves an X38 board and an E8400. Unless you are doing some serious stuff that requires 4 cores the E8400 will be faster.

Thanks for the tip ron...

I don't have much background knowledge of Intel motherboards really... I don't plan to SLI really, and if I were into spending that amount of money, another $300 for a top of the line Motherboard wouldn't kill me...

Can someone throw me a some recommendations for Non-SLI Intel motherboards?

I'm trying to stay away from DDR3 for now... So no x48 for me...

Are you telling me this is a good Non-SLI alternative?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813121314

I'd like a decent overclocker....

I'm a heavy gamer, so I don't know why I wouldn't buy the Q9300, but all advice is welcome to me... I've been into other things than computers recently, and haven't kept up with Intels much at all... I even left my baby AMD in the dust...

I'm new to Intel in some aspects, though I have made a few Q6600 builds for friends.

I'm planning on air cooling with the AC7.

if you want a quad stay away from the 9300. it fails hard. get a Q9550 when it comes out. and as for a board dont go nvidia chipset unless you are going to have SLI.

Really nice story lol, hopefully my Q6600 won't get any strokes, that's why I won't raise its pacemaker frequency above 3.4GHz!
Since you are a gamer, I recommend the Q9300 on top of the Q9450 and the upcoming Q9550 on top of the Q9450 (higher multiplier) because games are going to support multi-core in the near future, and also, anyone beneficiates for quad-core (many applications running at once...). And P35 or X38 will be great for that, or nVidia nForce 790i SLI or 780i SLI !

If any Quad core, I'm going with the Q9300, not the Q6600, nor am I waiting for the Q9550...

But for current, non-optimized gaming... I think a Duo may be the better option...
I highly doubt that the games I play now will be optimized for Quads in the near future (COD4, HL1\\2).

If this is the truth, would the Wolfdale E8400 be my best choice?

Please recommend me a Xxx or Pxx that uses DDR

That DFI DK p35 if you plan to not SLI. Good overclocking board that has alot of good reviews.

If you plan on gaming then I would suggest you grab the e8400 over the Q9300... The x9 multi will make OCing a breeze and I don't even think Crysis benefits from 4 cores at this point in time. The DFI DK P35-T2RS gets my vote in terms of price/performance.

DFI DK P35-T2RS for $139.99 @ newegg.com

DFI also offers 2 X48 boards that support ddr2. -> DK X48-T2RS and LT X48-T2R.
