yeah each gpu needs 1 cpu core to run (uses 100% on 1 core).

So if you had a skull trail platform with 8 cores..... (2) X2s + 4 PCI cards.

That was mostly true in the previous GPU client. Not so much in this one. And there is room to tweak it so it uses less CPU cycles. See the latest Stanford News post. Mike Houston is working on reducing CPU cycles.

hd 3000 series whereas even a 8800gt only has like 120 or so, these are what compute
the folding so the 8800's would only be 1/2 as good if that.

I read this a while ago and it makes sense. Ati had focused their card line on other
things the Nvidia, for when games become more reliant on the pixel shaders.
Where Nvidia cards focus on texture units.
The HD3 series from ATI uses groups of SPs. 4 can do nothing but number calculations, the last one can do just about anything... sometimes my HD3870x2 makes me coffee in the morning. NVidia's SPs can all do whatever they want. The HD4 series has 480 SPs and 4Ghz GDDR5, imagine the folding power with 4 GPUs like that

Check your stats though, you have to do quite a few to equal SMP.

I tried it then dropped back to SMP, due to the fact that it uses one GPU core and 60% of my CPU.

Thats not to say that it won't work for you, I hope it gets better as the versions evolve.

It's more than 50. In the last 36 hours i have gotten over 2k points in just gpu points (i know cause i stopped cpu folding for this time). So am i the only one only getting the 5,000 step wu? i want huge! i really want to see what these things can do.
