Actually get MORE choppiness and slowdowns then my Ultra, it didn't matter that my FPS was higher, the game ran bad as did most games I played. It was sickening when Sins of a Solar Empire was bogging down my mighty 9800GX2. Like I said, I really hope they get this straight because you could tell that there is some serious potential with the card, but as coginthewheel said, the next gen is in July, and if they can't get this card up to snuff by then I have a feeling we won't be hearing much from the 9800's after that.
I think you gave up far too soon. It's still a new card. Give it some time for drivers to mature, and these issues will get ironed out. I play Crysis, CoD4, Frontlines Fuel of War, and World in Conflict, all on 1680x1050 maxed with no AA and have never seen what you are describing as "choppiness and slowdowns". Never. Pure smooth, and for some reason, the games look quite a bit more clear than they did on the GTS 512 I used to own, on the same settings. Sorry to hear you had issues, but not everyone is experiencing this.
