Gateway laptop keeps dropping wireless signal

Hey all ...

Would really appreciate help with the following problem, as it is incredibly annoying lately :

I have a Gateway laptop running Vista. I have configured my wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) on my XP desktop properly (WEP protection). When I first turn on my laptop, everything is fine. I have a perfect, strong internet connection, and everything is great. After a random amount of time (sometimes 30 mins, sometimes 3 hours .. its always random), I lose connection completely and get the red X on my taskbar near the clock.

Once this happens, I then scan for routers and mine shows up with 100% signal, but if I try to re-connect, it refuses. The error comes up "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network" ....

Then to make matters even worse, if I turn on my desktop, my internet is completely out ... its like the laptop does something to shut down my entire signal. I have to then unplug the router and reset it, and restart the laptop to get everything back up and running.

If anyone has any ideas what could suddenly knock me out like this, Id love the advice. Ive had the laptop about 4 months now, and it only recently (2-3 weeks) started disconnecting like this. Is it a setting on my router ? Is it something to do with IP address ? Is it a setting in Vista ?? I am lost !!!!

VERY much appreciated

~Silent~

Try going into the "device manager", double click the wireless card, then under the advanced tab look for an option to decide which wireless types you want to use (A, B, G, N) and make sure you disable N. So run it ABG, or just G depending on your network layout.

Maybe the latest drivers can fix this? Which gateway laptop do you have?

I have a Gateway P-6825 model .. bought it around Xmas.

I went to the advanced tabs .. here are my current settings :

Ad Hoc Channel - 1 (im guessing this is the channel im broadcasting on .. which is 1 from my router).

Ad Hoc Power Manager - disabled

Ad Hoc Qos Mode - WMM disabled (no idea what this is)

Mixed Mode Protection - CTS-to-self Enabled (Again, no idea)

Roaming Aggressiveness - 3.Medium (no idea)

Throughput Enhancment - Enabled (no idea)

Transmit Power - 5.Highest (no idea)

Wireless Mode - 3. 802.11g (i just changed this, since my router does B&G only .. I have it set on my router to 'Mixed' however, and not B only or G only, since I have a Wii, Ps3, DS, PSP and I dont know what mode they use .. they all do work fine with it set to Mixed, so I stayed with it).
*******************

If anyone has any further ideas .. please post. Especially if it could be a driver from Gateway, because My Vista is up to date, but considering this recently started, I dont think its a driver issue, but anything's possible.

Go to control panel, then go to network connections. Under your wireless connections you don't have a bridge setup do you? If you don't know what a bridge is and there is one setup delete it.
Ive seen people that have no idea what it is and somehoe their computer gets one configured.

Using Device Manager, under Network Adaptors I see 2 things :

Intel (R) Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection #2
Realtek RTL8168B/8111B Famil PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)

I dont know why the first one says #2 .. where is #1 lol ??

I went to Power Managment, and the Allow computer to turn off this device to save power option is NOT checked, so that cant be it.

Not sure what a bridge is, but if I go to control panel/network and sharing center/ it shows me this :

This Computer ==== My Router Name ==== Internet

Access - Local & Internet
Connection - Wireless Network Connection 2
Signal Strength : Excellent

Anything else you guys need to know, just ask. Its been a little more stable the last few hours, but I still dont know if Ive solved anything.

Okay on the left click "Manage Network connection"

Then you will see your ethernet and wireless adapter is there a bridge connection listed in there ?

Hitting Manage Network Connections, Im given 2 icons :

The 1st is Local Area Connection which has a red X and under it says Network Cable unplugged (Im guessing this is because I am not wired into my router with a cable)

The 2nd is my Wireless Network Connection 2 with my router name and signal strength under that (which appears to be working fine).

Ive just powered up for the day. Im going to leave it on and see if it happens again at all .. Ive made some small changes as noted above, but still not sure if it actually solved anything. If not, maybe you can suggest something else.

As mentioned, I had it for about 3 months and it never happened once. Over the last few weeks, its been doing it, so I dont think it was a broken card or anything hardware related, or else it would have been like this since I opened my laptop in December. I havent installed any new hardware on it, and as far as software goes, just the Vista updates I guess and some games.
