Also, my personal take on SLI is that it should be considered a feature that can be implemented to make a slightly aged system a bit more competitive... buying two cards at the same time does not make much sense unless they are top of the line and you have money to burn... otherwise, buying a single, more powerful card is always the better choice (and leaves you with the room to buy a second one later on)
Thats what I did. I bought the EVGA 8800GTS(G80) core last year when they were top dog. My sig rig turns 1 year old this month and I just bought another 8800GTS for $114 after MIR. Raised my 3Dmark06 scores from 10k to 13.9K with the addition of the second card. 40% increase isn't bad..I am seeing about a 25-30% increased in games....
So yeah, buying 2x8800GTSs for $600 last year would have been silly. So I will say this. SLI is for aging systems or people who are buying the biggest baddest cards out there and there isn't one single card that can compete.
Because 2x8800GTSs wouldn't have been better than one 8800GTX ultra or whatever so it would have been silly to buy 2 cards when you can get one.
But buying 2x88000GTX ultra at the time could be forgiven as there isn't one single card that could compete.
