Overclocking a 8600GT 512MB XFX DDR2 card?

Thread Starter
Ok so I've recently purchased a 8600GT SLI 512MB DDR2 XFX card.
It plays Crysis at a fine framrate(30fps on medium).

So I was wondering if I could overclock my card to play faster and smoother, I've heard about riviatuner but it's too advanced and I couldn't find a guide for my card.

So, can I overclock? If so, a guide please?

Also, will this somehow brick my card?

Thanks,
Xandu.

If you recently purchased it, can you still return it for another type? If so, you should swap it for the 8600GT 256mb DDR3 as it will be faster and overclock better.

Also it would help if you fill in your system specs in your profile.

Hmm I could but, wouldn't 512MB look better than the 256MB one?

Plus Crysis already needs like 640MB for recommended usage.

No if you play medium 256MB GDDR3 us much faster then 512MB DDR2.

You COULD overclock a 8600GT, but it would be minimal, and would have a huge impact on the already monstrous fan. If you think its loud now, if you up the speeds by even a meager 10%, then it would sound like a jet turbine (taken from experience of XFX 8600GT's).

If you intend on going to higher resolutions (I doubt you would, because the card won't handle anything above 1280x1024), the extra RAM would help greatly with the Frame Buffer.

A 8600GT has a 128-bit memory bus and can therefor properly address 256mb of memory.

If it was 512mb DDR3 then I would say, keep it.

What resolution are you playing at?

1024 X 768.
No AA, everything on medium, 30fps.

Will applying Crysis patches or updating drivers make it go any faster?

sometimes a patch can increase performance issues, but if your looking for noticeably large improvements, hardware updating or OC'ing is the key. over clocking them can help a little i would think, but im not sure about how good the stock coolers would be, remember, a hot graphics card can hinder performance.
