eVGA 9800GX2 freeze / lag in game

Thread Starter
Specs:
eVGA 680i SLI (P32 Bios)
Intel Wolfdale E8400 4.2GHz (Zalman CNPS 9700NT)
OCZ ReaperX DDR2 1100 (Overclocked, 5-5-5-15)
eVGA 9800GX2 (All stock settings)
PC Power 750w Quad (Fully 100% compatible with this card)
Windows XP Media Centre SP2

I'm sure I am not the only one experiencing this problem.. but as you can see from the topic, this is exactly what I'm getting.

Anyway. Right off the bat I would like to inform whoever reads this that yes, I am overclocking my cpu and yes I am overclocking my ram. This wasnt ever an issue with my Ultra. The case I am using isnt the best for airflow, so I know it *could* be overheating (NZXT Apollo).. I mean the GX2 just barely fits. Thats my #1 initial thought as to what the problem could be. Also, before installing the card, I went directly into safe mode and removed every driver, then rebooted, installed nforce drivers, rebooted, installed GX2 latest drivers.

The games I play is Call of Duty 4 / CS:S / FFoW. Ok so the first game I fired up was COD4
I was scrimming for about 2 hours with no problems, so I was quite pleased. I started Counter-Strike and after about 10 minutes, bam. It wasnt even anything I have ever seen before, its hard to explain. It was a bunch of random colours and weird stuff I dont know, then it froze. I've seen this before and I was like son of a b I'm overheating. Then I tried FFoW and yeah that lasted like 1 minute literally. So I wanted to hadouken this video card but I didnt. I read somewhere that RAM had to do with it, in terms of timings and overclock. I believe this is completely plausible. I mean, if you look in My Computer -> Properties.. My RAM is now 2.25 / 3GB (32 bit os). This is interesting because the Ultra uses .25 (Atleast on my machine it did). Im not sure if this is because of the Dual GPU's which it probably is, but thats not really the problem here. I'm looking for a solution. I dont really want to go and buy a new case (I dont even know what case I should get.. I want something really efficient.. I was thinking of the NZXT Tempest.. but that might be all hype.. and people say the Antec 900 is bad but I like the cooling in it, I might go for that one. I like flashy looking things)

Anyway I need a solution. I'm kicking myself for getting this card its already cost me $200 between shipping and a new Power Supply, and possibly another $100 for a case. Am I doing something wrong? I only got it yesterday so I didnt have time to play with it. Im leaning towards overheating because to be honest the cooling in my case is poop. In your opinion, for whoever is kind enough to reply, If I got a case with far superior cooling and airflow, will my problem be resolved?

Hmm...that's weird.

Do you have an extra fan around that you could use to spot cool the card and see if that helps?

I should, I can leave the side off. Its weird because it works great in COD4 but once I play something else it freezes. Also last night, I woke up to a BSoD. Pretty weird. Ok.

Next question: Im thinking of picking up the 900 because its cheap and has ok cooling.
My next question is, will my GX2 fit? I like the idea of the top exhaust and front intakes (Yes Im aware that cable management is poor in this case but i can twist-tie and manage it myself.) Does anyone have any experience with this case in terms of the GX2 compatibilityand its cooling?

Think about it, my current case has no top exhaust, no intake and 1 rear exhaust plus the cables are a mess, which is why I think I should invest in a better case.
I am aware there are Cooler Master cases which are good but as of this writing I'm on a budget due to retarded car problems.

Whats your opinion?

This sounds like either a serious driver issue or a defective card. Bad artifacts would normally indicate too high of an OC, but if this is behaving the same way at stock, I would bet your card is either seriously overheating or worst-case scenario is it's defective. Use RivaTuner to increase its fan speed. Also, maybe try using the other DVI port on the video card.

If you want a better case, aim for something larger than the 900, especially if you have gobs of long cables. The 900 is good for relatively large cards, but using something that is pretty much the same size if not a little larger than an 8800 Ultra, the more room you have around it the better. I would suggest the Antec P182, but that's just my personal preference.

First things first.

Test it out with EVERYTHING at stock and see if it still crashes. Even though it worked with your Ultra, between drivers and the newness of the card, it might be enough to throw things off.

If all works well, move your OC back to it's stable level one bit at a time (I suggest FSB, then Multi to get to CPU oc, then RAM MHz, then RAM timings, then subtimings)

Also, I had that same chip and 1.31v for 4.22GHz seems kind of low. What did you use to test the stability?

I hope its not defective, I dont think it is to be honest, I'm quite positive its overheating. Ill downclock everything, and try to run some benchmarks and games. I did properly uninstall and reinstall all drivers Nforce and Forceware before doing anything initially. Could be the driver and my mainboard but I dont think so, I'm pretty sure its overheating.

Ill try taking off the panel and blowing air on it before lowering clocks to see what happens.

I used the ESA stability test with the nvidia package.. didnt use super pi or whatever. Its been running fine and cool for a few months 24/7 idle @ 39 degress load @ 55 degrees

thirdm00n, I don't know about CS but with FFOW i know I had the same thing, I also tried reducing all overclocking etc to see if that was it; but I ended up getting it to work by terminating all but 3 items in my user on Task Mgr. I just leave task mgr, explorer and setpoint for my G5 mouse within my user only on Task Manager, and FFOW runs like excellent. Until I did that I was having to play it on my other machines to enjoy, but now my main rig I can use.

Before that, I couldn't play at all, the opening flash shots of the KAOS animation and so on would take like 5-8 mins, before I got to the main game menu, and then I couldn't set anything up as mouse lag was shocking, so I couldn't even set up the video res and so on; I couldn't get into a game submenu, I was not a happy camper so to speak...

Hope it helps,

Cheers

thirdm00n also... The RAM loss is due to the GX2 being a SLi card, as prior I had 3.582GB of RAM and now I have 3.07GB and still with Physical Address Extension active, so u will lose it as windows needs the extra memory space to address the second lot of 512MB on the GX2 as the system sees a SLi setup.

Yes, I thought so too. Ok, so, a few solutions have been brought up by various forums.

- Downclock only RAM or;
- Downclock everything
- Adjust the fan to manual above 60%
- Disable all start up items
- Install fresh drivers
- Reinstall Windows

These are all valid points. Im going to downclock everything to stock speeds, take off the side panel and see if it happens. I might just RMA the card if it IS defective but apparantly I'm not alone on this one. Thanks for the tip on FFoW. This is very interesting as Call of Duty 4 didn't once crash? I mean, thats weird. Oh well, I'll play with it later =)
