Dunno, but I hope you get it working. It's pretty much my favorite game of all time. There's a pretty steep learning curve (for an fps) and the beginning is pretty hard. You won't have very good weapons/armor/artifacts/terrain knowledge to help you out. But over time you start to figure things out, learn to use the pda properly, figure out what you can and can't safely ignore in the game, and most importantly, find some better gear... and that's when it starts getting really fun ... the middle portion of the game (that's most of it) is really friggin cool. You'll find you have HUGE levels to run around in, lot's of side missions, stuff to discover and experiment with, a cool storyline, awesome atmosphere ... and some of the spookiest areas I've ever seen in a game.
Here's a few early game hints for ya that I think are pretty key (these aren't spoilers, just little 'helpers'.
1) The military under the train bridge can be avoided by going through a hole in the fence and over the tracks. As you look at the bridge, it'll be over to the right, a few hundred yards down (easterly) from the bridge. Saves you from having to bribe them with your hard-earned cash to get through.
2) After you rescue nimble and cash out the goodies you'll gather in that mission, head up to the area on the map called "Dark Territory". Just avoid conflict and the cries for help as you head up there, the fight's will be there when you get back to the Garbage. You want to make sure you have an anti-rad kit with you when you go, and you want to *RUN* through the irradiated zone that you'll hit right before the entrance to the DV. Use the anti-rad if you need to in order to avoid death.
Once there, depending on the version, you may be able to find some "Mama's Beads", an artifact that is really nice (and very rare) right when you walk in. Don't spend too much time looking for it, you'll wanna quickly talk to the "Duty" member there, and follow him and his instructions. Help him rescue his buddy (a save right after you 'take position' is a good idea!) and then you'll get yourself a SCOPE that can be used on the AK rifles. This is pretty key, trust me. The whole process is well worth your time, and you'll learn a bit about the lay of the land. Look for the Beads on your way out if you didn't find em the first time, if they're not around, then the version you're playing has moved them. They should be *somewhere* in the Dark Valley in any case. You'll find 'em later.
3) Once you open up the Bar (Rostok) area, you can immediately head north to the Army Warehouses (probably should see the Bar Keep first, but ...) area, where you'll meet the 'Freedom' dudes for the first time. Again, don't interact/talk to anyone, you shouldn't have any fights to deal with. You wanna get into their base, cross the bridge, and then hang a left (east). Go down to the second building on your left, just passed the downed tree. In this building you'll find a Vintar BC, a *great* gun to have. Silenced, scoped, used in single shot mode it makes an awesome sniper rifle (although you have to account for bullet drop). Directly above you when you find the gun, is an ammo box for it. In order to get at it, climb the guard tower just to the east of the building. Once you get high enough, you'll see there will be a hole in the roof of the building. Scope in with your AK and shoot the ammo box from up in the tower. The ammo will fall through to where you found the gun originally, just go back and collect it. Now you're set to head back to the Dark Valley to 'meet' Borov and hit the underground lab X18. A very scary place...
With these last 'gun-secrets' in hand, you'll find the game a lot more fun, imho. It'll still be tough, trust me, but not as frustrating because you'll have a little 'upper-hand' by having grabbed 'later game' gear earlier than the storyline will take you to area's they are in.
Good luck, and enjoy!
