XP does not natively support dual core CPUs. Sometimes a reinstall is needed, other times, the service pack will correct it. The best way to check is to run Task Manager and see if there are 2 graphs representing the cores under Performance.

The reason why the bios shows the hardware is because the hardware is coded with basic bios code.

Vista on the otherhand does support multi core CPUs natively, and almost never require a reinstallation of the OS. When I upgraded to a quad core from my E6600, Vista detected new hardware, updated the drivers and restarted.
Ah, thanks for that information ! + Rep

well thats what i thought. i just wanted to be sure- because i haven't had such good luck with this xeon when i o/c. i had to do bios flash to even use the new wolfdale- and not sure if theres any difference. one would think new bios=new mobo in some respects. no the hardware doesn't change but the way the bios uses it does. i havent checked windows update to see if theres any hardware update yet- i'll do that soon. i may re-install windows just for kicks in a week or 2- everything important to me i keep on a passport drive anyways. i keep my main drives lean and clean- just the os, some utilities, and a few games installed. no great loss if i format and start over.

haha well i had to reformat sooner than i thought. long story short...........

after posting here i was in the process of updating my nforce drivers when there was a terrible power drain at my house. found out the next day when i had no hot water it was my hot water heater that shorted out and melted down lol- but mid process my surge protectors popped and when the power came back up my machine was dead. spent all night trying to get into the machine but to no avail. had to reformat. good news is all i lost was a few screenshots i had saved and a beta for age of conan that i downloaded again later. kinda sucks that is like a 20gb download but oh well.

remains to be seen if i get a better o/c now- i havent tried yet. i just returned my settings to 3.38 and am getting stuff reloaded back onto the drives. i'll be sure to post if there is a good result.
