wether the card is PCIE 1.x or 2.0 also plays a part. some reviews say that x8/x8 has about only 5% loss with PCIE 2.0

Any PCI-e 2.0 card out now will run fine in a PCI-e 1.1 slot.

but for pcie 2.0 to be useful , as in provide double bandwidth, the slots have to be pcie 2.0 as well. right?

The M2N32 you mention is a 16x with 2 cards.

So what MB are you looking for now?

I have tested the x16 vs x8 in this setup below. I test two low end 7300GTs.

This MSI mobo has four PCIe slots. Though only the fourth slot will run x8. So I benched SLI using the 2nd and 4th slots. Running SLi at x8, x16 compared to x16, x16. At x16, x16 SLi my 3Dmark06 score was 5100. At x8, x16 my score was 4300. My single card would score 3400.

So yes. x8 will limit you. Even with low end SLi setups.

Yup, I'm pretty sure that the bandwidth is not needed right now though. If you use a PCI-e 2.0 graphics card, you'll get the same performance in a PCI-e 1.1 or PCI-e 2.0 slot. PCI-e 2.0 allows for double the power through the slot though, 150w instead of 75.
