If you're seeing crashes in the same situations time and again ... the first things I'd try are a driver reinstall, and reinstalling directx (get the newest while youre at it)

However, and this may be kinda bad news considering you got it on Steam, but I usually found that having stalker hard-crash my system a bunch of times often would cause me a similar problem, and thus I would end up having to do a reinstall of the game to get it working right again. Corruption issues I suspect.

And as others said, its pretty sensitive to any traces of instability in your system, be they gfx card or cpu oc related. It still crashes on me from time to time, too, but I'm pushing my system pretty hard.

The patches have different versions for steam, us, and international, if my memory serves.

Hope you get it worked out. It's a finicky game, since it's very ambitious, and not made by some huge budget outfit. But it's also like my favorite game ever... I was actually just playing it this AM myself ... and I've finished it like 5 times already ...

Oh, yeah, and in case you don't know, leave AA completely off *everywhere*, in game, and in NCP. And leave AF to app selected (but crank it up in game). I leave grass shadows off and then crank everything to max (full dynamic lighting, of course) except AA. The 8800GT can handle those settings up to 1680 with only minimal occasional slowdowns. The 'hitching' you get in game is normal and CPU related ... you really need a high OC on your proc to get rid of them completely in my experience.

Another thing : the noprefetch thing ... i don't recommend it. What I do recommend though, is the float32 mod. Makes it look WAY better. Easy to find, just google it.

I got a free copy of Stalker with my motherboard and I can't even get it past the Title screen on my desktop. I installed it and put some patch I found on it and it still won't even run. I gave up.
