Noob trying to overclock Q6600

Thread Starter
Hey, So i want to overclock my Q6600 to 3.2ghz to 3.8ghz, but i have no idea how to do this.

I have a Thermalright ultra 120 Extreme that just came in the mail today, so I'm pretty excited to see what i can get the q6600 up to with it.

System specs are below and if you need any other info i'll be happy to provide it so i can learn how to overclock.

welcome to OCN man.

You have a nice aftermarket cooler, and a great computer setup.

This is your most likely scenario. 3.8 is a very high OC, especially for air, even with your TRUE.

you can most like hit 3.0 Ghz on stock voltage, if not one notch above, 3.2 will be an easy snag in most cases, maybe 3.4 around 1.4v if you're lucky (all depends on the chip), and to get to 3.6 might take a bit of work. Anything over that is gold, and really hard to attain, but who knows, you might get it.

Few things to keep in mind: you don't want to see your Quad go over 72 C and you generally want your max vcore to be under 1.5v for 24/7 use.

download these programs:

Prime 95
CoreTemp
SpeedFan 4.34 + beta
CPU-z

That should get you started for now..

I didn't help much, but I wish you good luck in your endeavors overclocking.

edit: I also have a little guide that might help you a bit more, in my sig.

a quick and dirty guide

1. never use clockgen
2. never use clockgen
3. to hit 3.2 change the bus speed to 355 from 266 in BIOS
4. you may want to up the vcore to 1.3. run stability tests, ie Prime95, for 4-5 hours at least.
5. if successful, lower the vcore until it fails to remain stable. revert to lowest stable vcore possible.

The Q6600 is a beast and can take some hot temps, but I dont let tjunction (4 cores)exceed 65c.

So in the Bios, How do i change the bus speed? (Bios is Phoenix)
Is it the FSB (QDR),MHz [1066] or something else

well when i tried 1333 and started my computer it would just restart windows, any ideas of why this happened

so i went with something smaller and increased it by 1120 (280x4) and am running the test right now and its getting some high temps compared to what i did had earlier ((((c1 = 59)(c2 = 57)(c3 = 46)(c4 = 44))))

Test so far:

Your 680i LT is going to hold you back. The LT cant provide the propper GTL REF voltage the quad core needs to run highr FSB. You might be suck at 3.0GHz.
