8800GTS lacks 2D mode?!

Hello, is it because of the drivers or the BIOS that this card runs still on full frequency? I have looked on the web a little and it seems that it is a feature I really don't look forward summer heat, because it will be hell with my card not switching to lower frequency...

you mean like in ATI tool where there are 3 sliders?
my 8800gt only has 2D and High-powered 3D, no more low-power 3D.

Is this what you mean?

Doesn't Vista Aero make the card stay in 3d mode either way? So it doesn't matter.

I believe so. I would disable Aero if thats a problem.

Yes I mean those 3 sliders. In Rivatuner I should be able to set frequency and fan speed for each mode, but the card is probably still in performance 3D because the core frequency is still 575. In Windows XP also so it is not the aero...

nvidia pretty much did away with the multiple power modes on the 8800 series cards as far as I've seen (the 7900gs and some other 7-series lacked it as well), they all just run at one speed all the time. The switching ability which can use different VIDS/Frequencies for the different modes (2d/3d) is functionality which has to be built into the hardware of the card (and its bios), and it's just physically not on these cards. So, no, its not related to Aero, nor can it be 'enabled' via bios flash or by (probably) any other means short of a radical hardware mod.

You can however set multiple overclock profiles in rivatuner, and then set up a keyboard shortcut to activate each one. Say, really really low clocks and fan speed for non-gaming/3d intense apps, and your overclock and high fan speeds for when you need it.

that's what I was afraid of. NVidia will surely not have the mark "green computing" for geforce 8xxx :-] I guess there is no way to set some automatic profile switching when some application is launched? There are application profiles in forceware drivers, but it is probably impossible to adjust frequencies besides AA and texture quality isn't it?
