3.8GHz P4 with nforce4 mobo 1080p Bluray capable?

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I'm going to be building an HTPC based on Thermaltake's DH101 chassis. I am planning to use an ATI HD3850 graphics card.

Now, I happen to have an Asus P5N32 SLI Deluxe motherboard (cannot take C2Ds) with a 3.8GHz P4 and 2GB of PC-5200 RAM lying around. Anyone able to tell me if this will be sufficiently powerful for playing full HD content, or will I need to go dual core and replace the mobo and CPU?

Thanks,
CL.

I would recommend a dual core. That P4 will drag.

I think the P4 will do just fine. If te fastest P4 so yes and it will be baced up by the good Video card.

if the ati card supports AVIVO (which i'm pretty sure it does) then it will be able to process H.264 processing which is needed by blue ray.

I would still advise upgrading to a P4 dual core though, even though yours is 3.8GHz it may struggle with multi tasking but it might be worth trying it out if you have it 'lying around'

good luck, Boyd

edit: i checked and the hd3850 does support AVIVO, you should have no trouble because the GPU shares its pixel shaders for video processing. It also supports up to 5.1 pcm decoding which is used in some blue ray discs.

if not overclock it lol

You should be fine. The GPU will do most of the work and it will not hurt to give it a try.
Only problem you might run into is you may not be able to play "Full" hd content because of HDCP compliant hardware. I can assure that all of my hardware is not HDCP compliant but I can still get full 1080p with a few good programs and one of these..http://www.canadacomputers.com/index...042&cid=CR.405

Good luck and if you do attempt it, get back and let us know your outcome.

Ahh good point guys. I forgot about the 3 series being able to do the encoding for the cpu.

Can't that board take a Pentium D? It might be a bit of an improvement, though the GPU will take a bit of the load off the CPU.

how are you planning on connecting the card? i ask because component video can only carry 1080i.

TBH it looks the same to me, even in cod4 with lots of action

I know the 8 series except the Ultra and GTX have a dedicated HD processor on the card called "PureHD". This means the card deals with the processing of the HD content so the CPU does not need to work as hard. nVidia's reasoning why the Ultra and GTX don't have this is because they figure anyone with the Ultra or GTX has a fast CPU to back up a high end card.

Now I think the ATI HD series has this on the card as well.
