Yup just make sure your monitor is HDCP compliant too or protected discs will just show black.

Thanks for all the input everyone, much appreciated. For those asking, I have a Sony Bravia KDL-40X2000, which is a full HD 1080p LCD panel, so it is HDCP compliant. Ditto for my Onkyo 905.

Component can do 1080p signal. Maybe Bluray won't let you do it because HDCP, but the connection can do it.
TBD..

can it? i couldnt get any more that 1080i on my panasonic HDTV (yes its 1080p capeable) in games or the windows desktop.

i couldn't even set more that 720p for crysis, which was odd because cod4 ran ok at 1080i. maybe my pc thought i was having a laugh asking it to run crysis at 1920x1080

3.8ghz p4 is enough though for HTPC, you might want something power effiecent instead.

So how did it go with the P4 3.8Ghz and the new graphics card and running 1080p video?

I am in almost exactly the same position (P4 3.8Ghz, 2Gig ram, looking to upgrade gfx card etc), and found this thread. Did you manage to play the infamously evil "bird scene" from Planet Earth?

Thanks!
