3.8GHz P4 with nforce4 mobo 1080p Bluray capable? - Page 3

if this is for movies and videos, than you have to get a dual core. there are HD movies that takes my opteron to 100% on a 20" monitor. if you are planning to play movies on a 1080p tv with a single core, you are going to be very unhappy.

EDIT: here is a link to some sample videos. see if you can play with happily.

please note that these videos are WMV and not h264/mpeg4-avc.

has hdmi out and a nice large dual slot heatsink .... would be handy i the way all the hot air gets pumped outside the case instead of satying inside

thats good but for a HTPC, all you need is a HD 3450 the most. The HD series from ati and avaio from Nvidia will unload the work off the cpu to the videocard.

Ordered an ATI HD 2400PRO, will report back with results on Monday

The link below has a very interesting comparison... it seems that with ATI, the model of graphics card has VERY little influence over CPU usage!!!

Yeah a 3.8 is not going to be good enough for 1080p on heavy action scense it's going to bog. Wait let me restate that.

What type of media do you plan on watching? I have a 3ghz, gig of ram and 7800gt with a blu ray drive, and movies play fine @ 1080p with coreavc installed and Cyberlink.

Though if I play an .mkv w/ h264 thats 1080p it's chug chug chug all day long because the graphics card doesn't help then.

does coreavc play blurays all by itself or does it need additional plugins?

No, coreavc is just a decoder I use it because my 7800gt isn't hdcp. I kept getting black screens on some BD movies, which coreavc seems to have fixed my problems.

I use Cyberlink Powerdvd Ultra to play my Blu's, since nobody has made a plugin yet for MediaPortal (I highly recommend for HTPC boxes).

coreavc also utilizes the CPU instead of the GPU.
