You go to the manufacturer's site and look at the 'CPU support' list. Like these, for example:

http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?f...&cat3_no=#menu
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/M...ProductID=2739

Phenoms will fit AM2. They are AM2+ and are backwards compatable as long as there is a BIOS available. the tough thing is that it is an HP, so there may not be a BIOS available from them if it is a proprietary mobo.

Honestly, the best thing for you to do is buy an aftermarket mobo and OS. You would then be able to OC and get more performance from that brisbane. Even if you can flash the BIOS on the HP, you would be limited to stock speeds. Also, I am not sure how the warranty and or OEM OS will be effected.

You wouldn't need a major "build" upgrade to increase performance. Just a new mobo, CPU, and OS. Your hdd is fine, your RAM sit is fine, your GPU (obviously) is fine. So just grab yourself a decent motherboard, grab some builders pack of vista or xp or whatever, and pick the cpu you want and run with it.
