completely untrue. the lappy in my sig retailed for i think 799-899 at the time and i've not had a bit of trouble out of it. it still does what i need it to do even though it's a few years old and the same way it was when i bought it (no upgrades). just make sure she gets the right equipment for what she's going to be using it for. ie: i use my lappy for downloading music and surfing the web, thats pretty much it. it had/has the specs that i needed for what i needed it to do so it's been a great laptop.

Toshiba are great. I had an older Satelite that finally died (Motherboard meltdown). It last almost 5 years which I was amazed at. I would say, at personal risk of getting stabbed, that your mom should get a Mac book. Refurbished ones go for about 800$ on apple.com and they ship for free (Well at least in Canada).
Your mom doesn't need any special sauce for gaming or impressive look like Vista. Mac is the way to go for her and as a bonus it's old-er/ish person friendly. I plopped my Macbook in front of my gramps who had never used a computer before besides a ATM and he was able to use most of the main functions within an hour.

To see refurbished Macs just go to Apple.com/.ca and click "Store". The scroll down until you see "Refurbished iPod/Mac" on the left.

Hope this helped!
