College laptop/desktop search

Thread Starter
Hey guys,
I'm off to Bucknell University this fall, and I'm starting my search for a computer.

I would just get a laptop, but I have a sound system (Creative gigaworks g500) that will not work with a laptop because it has more than just the green jack blah blah blah.

Point being, I think it might be nice to have a laptop to carry around if I need to do a study group or go to the library or something, but I would also like a nice desktop for gaming and music.

I have more or less $1300 to spend on the combo.

I can custom build the PC, but a custom laptop is a bit beyond me.

So the laptop can be pretty basic I dont need anything fancy, but the PC I would like to be on the nicer end.

Thanks.

Do you have a size restriction on the case?

Go pick up a $500 lappy from office depot or some other store (except best buy). Get one with 1gb of ram and a low end duel core. Then upgrade to 2.5 gb (2gb x1 +512x1). It will be fine for typing and web browsing. Get either a 14.1in or 15.4. I would suggest a 14.1.

Build a $800 pc. This should be very doable. Do you need a monitor?

That graphics card will not cut it for gaming. You should go with an 8800GT at the bare minimum.

Thanks mumbles, but I'd rather stick to this idea.

Mortimers, could you point at a few lappies on newegg that look like what you're talking about?

Suggestions for this $800 build? I WILL be needing a monitor.
