4gb RAM = 3.25MB Ram

Thread Starter
I know Windows XP only allows 3.25GB RAM max for my system. But would there be any big benefit at all if i used a 64-bit o/s to get all the memory I need or should i just stick with winxp?

Unless you're maxing out your memory right now, you probably won't see a big benefit. If you make a move to Vista, get the x64 version.
You should get Vista x64 if you are thinking about getting a x64 OS. Otherwise just stick with XP.

And the benefit will be you being able to use all the ram.

I dont know if youll see a huge difference because xp already takes up barley any ram. Also unless you play games that literally take up 4 gb then it doesnt matter.
yeah, dont get xp64. It has many issues. I had that before I went to vista64. It had many driver issues.
Honestly, I dont see how you could use 4gb of ram in xp, so stay with it as long as you can.

Well XP has a kernel that only allows for 1 app to take no more than 2Gb RAM, so unless your seriously multitasking theres no need to get XP x64

You need a 64-bit OS for more than like 3gb of ram.

Actually Vista 64-bit still has the memory hole.

"By default, an all-64-bit PC will still have the standard big holes in its memory from three to four gigabytes. This is the lowest-hassle way to deal with the problem - just install more than 4Gb of memory, and live with the fact that your 8Gb PC with a 768Mb graphics card only actually has seven-point-not-much gigabytes of visible RAM." -Ask Dan (orginally posted by DuckieHo)

something that people don't realize is that it doesn't only take a 64bit OS to max out 4GB of memory but also 64Bit programs. For example, a game that runs on 32bit will not recognize all 4 gigs. And another disadvantage is that because most programs are in 32bit at this day in age, in a 64bit OS the 32bit programs are run in a emulated environment.
