Hot core 2 extreme! What's wrong??

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I just got AS5 and a new heatsink and my cpu temps are 50's and even reach 70. I have a Core 2 Extreme and a Nvidia 780i mobo. I've applied the AS5 about 20 times, tried using alot then a little. I've been to the Arctic silver website and applied it their way. I've updated my BIOS, could the voltage be wrong? I loaded the defaults. People were saying my heatsink surface is scratched. but i was cleaning it with the Arctic Silver steps 1 & 2 with a paper towel, how badly would that scratch it? I took some pics of the heatsink and cpu showing how they look when I take the heatsink off. I think I'm using to little AS5 in the picture.

What is wrong??

UserCP => Add System => Insert your specs. It will help us in every way.

Looking at your pictures, I'd see if my HSF was actually flat. Make sure its tight enough. Make sure its not too tight. Make sure you don't add too much or too little TIM. Also try reseating several times. Whats your overclock at?

I cover my whole chip with a thin layer even though they tell you what they did, Also the QX6700 is a hot chip to begin with water cooling is the best thing for them that's what I do with mine and it never gets above 30C at 3466Mhz 24/7.

QX6700/TDP 130watts + Zalman 9700 = 1.32 max vcore.
Anything more the Zalman can't handle.
Get your vcore off of auto and manually set it to 1.25v

I'm not overclocking at all. I don't really know much about that, but I want to learn, but first I think I need to get this thermal paste down.
Yes, It's a QX6700 Kentsfield
The reading off Clock Core are:
Frequency: 2666.64MHz not over clocked or anything.
VID: 1.3500v
Core #0: 44-45C
Core #1: 44-45C
Core #2: 38-40C
Core #3: 38-40C

The Heatsink is a Zalman 9500A

D/L CPU-Z and tell what vcore reads.

I'll tell you right now, the Zalman 9500 will not handle an overclocked QX6700.
