To Upgrade or not...

Thread Starter
My initial plan when building this rig was to buy a cheap, effective, and overclockable chip (AMD 64 x2 5000 BE) and then buy the new Phenom 9850 BE when it came out.

What do you think, is this a sound Idea?
I know there are a few pros and cons

Your system seems pretty good, do you do anything that needs a bit more power than your current rig? If its fine I would only get a new sound card if you wanted to, music/movies/games will sound better.

Not really, currently just using it for games, and modding/map editing (just built it about a week ago) and to test/get into the overclocking field.
But increasing performance for games/modding would defiantly be a Plus

I would stay x2, it very unlikely that you will get anything over 3ghz out of the quad core. Unless you do a lot of multitasking it won't be worth your money. The 45nm are supposed to be out late this year/early next year I would wait it out for them. If they aren't what you want then I would buy a good proven 65nm cpu then.

Then should I make the leap to the 6400 BE? (tho I heard it was really poor to OC)

Thanks for the info, Ill probably stay with the 5000 and spend my money on a dedicated sound card, another GPU, or quality ram.
