Alredy has thermal paste?

Thread Starter
I just bought a new cpu and the supplied heatsink/fan has a sticky substance on the plate. Is this thermal paste? Do I still need to add more?

Any help would be much appreciated.

thats stock stuff. you should get better temps if you take that stuff off and use other compound like as5.

Well its a thermal pad pretty much the same thing. I would put some real thermal paste on it though to improve temps by a bit.

I do have some as5 I was going to use. Should I first clean the stock stuff off the heatsink and then use the as5 instead?

Yes. You can use alcohol or acetone. The higher the %, the better. After you completely cleaned it off, you can then apply AS5.

you could test it out first, put the h/s on with the stock stuff, check your temps. then take off the old compound(with a cloth or paper towel, then a q tip and alcohol) and apply the as5. just to give you an idea what kind of difference in temps. if you dont feel like putting the h/s on twice, i would deffinately take off the stock stuff and apply the as5.

This is going to be my first time installing a cpu heatsink so I think it calls for a bit of experimentation. I think I will try both and see if there is a difference.

So just to be sure the paste that was already on my stock cooler is enough and I just need to attach it and it should work fine? Right?
