have you tried reading your MOBO manual to see if something steps the CPU down ? (like Intel's C1E)

Freezing usually can be cause of temps or a faulty hardware (often RAM)

temp is ruled out. As for the ram, when setting up the board i inadvertently hit some f key that gave me a windows ram utility (no clue what I hit but seems to be a vista thing). Any ways, i ran that before I was having all the issues and got no negative results, so I've kept the ram out of my troubleshooting. However, I actually just happened upon another "in windows" Microsoft ram utility that promises a more thorough check and am currently running it. There was another utility that I used to use but cannot recall its name.

Credo, I'd recommend running memtest86 anyways. Make sure to run tests 5 and 8 each for at least an hour. The default loops are sometimes no sufficient.
What are the temperatures of your chipset during idle/load? Just to clarify, is your 9850 overclocked?
Please add your system specifications to your signature. This helps us know what your running. You can do this by going here: http://www.overclock.net/specs.php?do=addsystem
