Need advice: Q9300 w/out thermal paste

Thread Starter
Okay guys, I'm looking for some expert opinions here. In 3 weeks I'll be flying to US, where I'll be picking up all the components for my new computer. I want to build it while I'm in US to make sure it all works (in case I need to do returns on non-functioning pieces). This means I have to have my processor installed. After 18 days, however, I fly back to Prague. My motherboard will be my carry-on. I want to uninstall the heatsink before I travel because I'm scared it might snap something if bumped around.

I'm buying the stuff in US because in Europe some of this stuff is 2x the price because of VAT and such.

So you see my problem: I have to install everything to make sure it works, but then when I take off the heatsink for travel I'll have thermal paste everywhere. So, can I run a Q9300 on STOCK speeds with a good aftermarket heatsink (Cool Master Gemini II w/120mm fan) without any thermal paste?

What is the worst-case scenario? Could I damage the processor? Or would it simply become unstable?

Thanks!!

P.S. I'm hoping since it's stock speeds on a 45nm chip, the thing will run cool anyway.. and the heatsink I'm getting is huge (and the fan too). I know I can buy ArctiClean, but I hate paying more for shipping a product than it's base cost. Maybe it's not needed at all.

You only need a small ammount of thermal paste the size of a grain of rice. Just wipe it off when your done.

On the other hand I'm pretty sure you could package your computer back up in the case's box and have that be one of your checked pieces of luggage.

You can just buy a small tube of Artic Silver 5 then when you get back to Europe, you can apply it.

If you're just booting into bios, no thermal paste would be fine. It'd take a while for it to heat up to a dangerous level.

The GeminII is a pretty good cooler. If it's got a good contact patch and two good fans on it, a test boot into BIOS shouldn't hurt the proc any. It's also f'n huge, lol. It cools by sheer mass as much as by airflow

Apply the paste when you test it, once you see its working, wipe it off, then when your back in Prague, reapply it. The thermal paste youll get will be good for more than one use, so you should have more than anough to spare to apply it many times.
