Computer locking up in games. - Page 2

Check that your cards temperature isn't very high, also your CPU could be overheating? Ram problem? PSU? I'd look into trying those or just simply defragment your hard disk.

Well, I just ran AoE3 with temp monitors running, it bombed out at about 68 degrees Centigrade, after I alt-tabbed because I got an email notification (usually turned off). Cpu didn't get above 48 on any of the cores. I wonder if it's a windows problem (even though I re-installed after uninstalling UT3). I have never in my 4-5 years experience seen anything like this. I will try uninstalling/reinstalling AoE3 this weekend when I have access to the discs.

Edit: everything is at stock speed, as I think I've already mentioned.

Ummm ok

68 degrees is very hot for CPU. You mention it but is it for the 8800 GTS for the CPU. I'll assume the GPU since you then mention the CPU never goes above 48C...

If we assume heat isn't an issue, I would say the most likely candidates are voltage (if any problems with the PSU being stable) OR drivers.

I would say that testing the GPU in many apps and games would be a good test. Run ATI Tool for 30 minutes, run 3dmark 06 and as many games as you have installed. If none of the games crash other than AOE and CS.

If the above doesn't work, try OLDER drivers than the most current ones OR Omega drivers. See if they help.

68 is on the 8800, cpu wasn't above 48 on any of the cores. I will try the Omega drivers when I get back from class this afternoon, I've already tried the newest drivers, and some that are a couple months old. If it were a psu voltage problem, it should bomb out on all games...but again, only AoE 3 and CSS, I also ran the fur rendering app that I found here for 10 or so minutes, I will run it while I'm at class for an hour and a half.

So upon returning from class, the computer locked up with the video card at 70 degrees.

Problem seems to be solved. It just so happens that my video card was factory overclocked by about 15 MHZ which was causing the problem, just got done with a round of AoE3 and no lockup. Thanks for all the help.
