Mario kart disappointment?

Thread Starter
Me and my friends loved mario kart double dash for the gamecube, we're even considering setting up a network game of it (hence the plea for them in my sig and a thread in wanted for the adapters).

But one of my friends brought round the new mario kart for wii which I've been looking forward to for ages.

But...I'm really disappointed. It wasn't anywhere near as frantic as double dash and graphically it looked awful. I'm not expecting high definition glory but they've gone seriously wrong if it looks worse than double dash which was made a whole 5 years ago. The tilting of the remote to turn was fun, but using a GC controller was far easier. Online play does tempt me a lot though but I'm not sure if it will be any good.

I'm not sure whether to buy this now...Does anybody else feel the same?

Mario Kart Wii seems to have gotten the same treatment as Super Smash Bros. Brawl when compared to their predecessors. Advanced techniques in Mario Kart Double Dash like Snaking have been removed and the game seems simplified similar to how Wavedashing, L-Cancelling, etc. were removed from Brawl and the gameplay was slower.

Though I am a fan of the Mario Kart series (particularly Super and Double Dash), I was honestly not too hyped up for Mario Kart Wii. The last time I was actually really excited about a new Mario Kart game was Mario Kart Arcade GP (1 and 2).

My family can't wait for Mario kart, we bought 4 generic wii steering wheels for $2 each. My parents were huge mario kart fans when N64 was popular.

I've had it preordered for some time, but seeing the disappointment I'm considering getting my money back.

That's just depressing... I've wanted to buy a WII for ages seeing as how I haven't bought a new console since the original PS2 came out. But everything I've played and read thus far has left me utterly uninspired. My buddies and I still play Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros., Bad Fur day and Golden Eye 007 for N64... At this rate I'll just keep my old console(s)/games and stick to PC RPGs, but that's assuming another RPG worth playing is released in my lifetime.

I knew what short comings to expect going into this game and didn't get over hyped for it... that being said, I got mario kart wii at the midnight release last night. It is fantastic!
Yes, the snaking is removed, yes there are some lame items (blue shell), and yes the AI in 150cc is obnoxiously cheap, BUT the online functionality is what makes this game a true winner.
The graphics are on par with what we've come to expect from a Mario Kart game. They didn't need to revolutionize the game graphically to make it superior to the predecessors (if you want top notch graphics you are on the wrong system to begin with).
Personally, I am glad that snaking is gone. It left people one way to win and that was to snake, period. If I was playing against someone who couldn't snake it was game over before we started. A lot of the fun was gone with zero challenge from an opponent. The Wii version has a lot of "rubber band action" and allows a person to never truly be out of the race even if they are in seventh place on the last lap.
The online components of ghost challenging, 12 player tournaments, time trial rankings, etc, are what separate the Wii version from the rest.
The Wii Wheel, which performs a TON better than I was expecting based on previous racing games on the Wii, helps cement Mario Kart Wii as the best game I've played on the system thus far.
*edit*
I am also digging the Mii intigration. I noticed while cruising around the tracks that some of my saved Mii's are featured on billboards and posters, as well as filling the crowds in the background. Being able to use my Mii as a racer is a nice feature as well.

I'm curious to see how other games contribute to Mario Kart the way that Galaxy did (you get a new racer as a "gift" with a Super Mario Galaxy save game file). I'd love to see third party developers donate some faces to the racer, but I'll be just as happy with Nintendo offerings.
*end edit*
