Reusing XP key on same computer

Thread Starter
I had to reinstall Windows on my brother's computer. The problem is that it didn't come with a Windows Home edition CD, but the computer itself has a home edition key on the side-panel. So we had to download an XP Home edition to use for the fresh install. We used the key during the install, but after the installation was complete, a register/validate popup came. (30 days left for activation...)

So we entered the key, only to have Microsoft claim it's invalid. The windows install was done on the exact same computer as the key was tied to, no new hardware between old windows and new. The only new thing was a partition we created to put the fresh windows install on. It's the exact same computer as it was just hours ago.

What do we have to do to get Microsoft to accept the key?

Call the activation number through the activation wizard...

I don't know the exact time line on how windows does this, but you can only activate windows twice within a short period of time, when you buy the OS (Before the key is ever used...)

Also, the automated activation thing on the phone works better than it used to, so give that a shot first, and when the automated voice asks if you have ever installed this copy windows before, just say no for simplicity....

I am curious if your key got black listed for some reason. Where did the key originate? OEM builder locally?? or??

Are you sure, I don't want to raise suspicion. The computer has been online for the last 2,5 years getting updates, are you sure Microsoft can't tell?

The computer is from Canada, I think it's a custom OEM build if those exist. It's not tied to Dell or anything, but just has a code on the side. We brought the computer with us when we moved back to Norway, which might explain why the code isn't accepted. In fact I seem to remember having some trouble with it when we first moved back... Anyway I'll call the number and see what happens.

Yeah...
I have an MSDN Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista.

It asks the same thing every time I call. "How many times has it been installed before" "once" How many computers" Once" "Recent Hardware changes" Yes:
Easy.
Sorry for the lack of spe.lling problems. I ham half asleep ath the moment.
