THE SAME THING in music, you have compositions and arrangements. A composition is the original work, the arrangement is the same work but revamped by another composer to make the original work sound like he wants it to sound.

I know thats not the BEST comparison but IT IS almost on the same grounds.
k, but legally you are still supposed to buy the right from the original artist.

Depends on what type of arrangement it is and it also depends how old the original work is.

The screwed up part is, you don't even get permission from the artist to make an arrangement, you ask the publishing company.

Artists don't own their own material anyway, you don't even steal from them. Whether it's a musician, software programmer, engineer, all ideas are property of the company they work for.

true, there can also be so much gray area in that. Opposed to taking a japanese only game and translating it to english then sell it in the USA and keep all the money, that is not legal.

Yeah, honestly thats whats wrong with the music market. The artists sell the music the company and the company sells their music and they lose creative control in some circumstances.

I didn't mean sell the software, I meant just distribute it, which is also illegal but honestly would you really blame the person ? Sure it's wrong for them to do it, but at the same time they done it out of good but at the same time their doing bad. It's kinda like telling someone a lie in order to make them feel better; its wrong to lie, but at the same time your doing a good thing for them.

That is true for most of the industry but not all. There are plenty of people that own the things they create. It depends if they signed a contract giving the rights away, that was the choice of the creator.

Here is an article that actually gets to the point of piracy in music. When it comes to music i feel piracy is ok, ESPECIALLY if it involves major labels.

By the way, I am a musician.

ALSO, some offensive language is used in the article that is linked!

Music piracy aside, when you pay for software, you aren't paying for the disk.. you aren't paying for Bill Gate's vacation spot.. you aren't paying for that project manager making 12 Billion a year either.. you're paying for some guy/gal hunkered down in a cubicle somewhere writing and testing code. They start at 9, they leave at 5. Odds are, they don't care as long as they get a check at the end of a week. MS has lots of those folks around, and when you add the hours spent on development together, its staggering.

The Linux kernel and the OS' that use it have just as much (I believe it is actually more) time put into it, but is done by volunteers.

So in the end, I have no problem with Microsoft charging for their software. The company is there to make money, the people are there to make a living and feed the family. On the other hand, I'm glad that there are alternatives to make a heap of hardware useful without paying for that R&D work.
