Can they just keep support for XP and Vista stuff in Windows 7 and scratch the older stuff? Or is that possible?

Well MS has already said it's back to basics in 7, so this whole thing is pointless.

I remember seeing one of MS's head engineers talking at a meeting and he said he didn't like how big it was. The programmers aren't dumb, even if they work for MS.

XP and Vista are just a modified version of Windows NT. They COULD put a crap load of stuff into Seven that will allow it to run every program ever made for Windows, but you'd need a BluRay just to use it (lots of files and such) If they scrap the entire idea of backwards compatibility, your installation disc would not be a DVD like Vista, but a CD like Windows NT was. Vista takes up like 5-10GB on some computers, imagine an OS that only needs a few hundred Megs!

Actually, my favorite OS was Win2000. Super stable, ran without a hitch for me. Supported everything too.

That would make a PC a console.

I've always thought about making an OS that's designed ONLY for games (essentially making the PC a console). It would need extreme graphics support (support by nVidia and ATI, that is), sound support (by creative, yeah, lulz good luck with that), and it would need its own API system stuff for programming games on.

But in all, I envision this OS that is made for games only.

An OS similar to what you have mentioned exists! Oh yes, it is real! And... it's in the PS3 and Xbox360. The moment you dedicate an OS to gaming, it's no longer a PC, but a gaming console.
